To apply to the IDFA Forum, first confirm that your project fits the Forum’s documentary and format requirements, then choose one program that matches its stage and needs, prepare the required project information and visual materials, and submit them during the edition’s application window. The 2026 project-entry call ran from June 1 to July 23 and is closed. IDFA has not established the dates for the next call on the pages reviewed, so filmmakers preparing a future application should use the 2026 requirements below as a planning guide and verify the next edition’s official terms before submitting.

What the IDFA Forum project application is for

The IDFA Forum is an industry event in Amsterdam where selected documentary projects are presented live to potential international partners. A project application is a request for selection to present work—not a general registration to attend the Forum. The 2026 Forum is scheduled for November 15–18, within the IDFA Festival, which runs November 12–22.

The Forum considers creative documentaries intended for theatrical distribution, television broadcasting, or other platforms. Eligible formats include one-off feature-length or television films, series, and immersive or interactive projects. A project can be in development, production, or post-production. Short films are not eligible.

You must hold the rights to the material you submit or have permission from the rights holders. Applying does not guarantee selection: the Forum chooses projects from eligible submissions using artistic and practical considerations.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

The practical sequence is straightforward, but each decision affects the next: check eligibility and rights, choose one program, prepare the entry information and visual sample to that program’s specifications, and submit within the stated window. Do not treat the 2026 dates or limits as a standing annual schedule. The 2026 call closed on July 23, and the official pages reviewed do not establish the next project-entry window.

Check whether your project is a fit

Assess the project and team

IDFA’s published considerations include a strong artistic vision and clear creative approach; a coherent narrative, visual, or experiential strategy, or a distinctive artistic direction still taking shape; and potential for international co-production, financing, or circulation. The team should be ready to engage with international partners and understand the project’s next steps.

These are selection considerations, not a published scoring rubric. IDFA also says its selection committee considers the project’s artistic quality, uniqueness of content, development stage, subject, team, exposure at other international markets, country of production, financing already in place, and genre, among other factors. The official pages reviewed do not state how these factors are weighted.

That means eligibility and competitiveness are different questions. A feature documentary in production may fit the broad eligibility rules, but the application still needs to make its creative approach, current stage, and next steps legible. If the project seeks partners, explain what kind of collaboration is relevant rather than assuming that a general request for support will tell prospective partners what they can contribute. The published guidance does not promise that any particular combination of stage, topic, financing, or team experience will lead to selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

International potential is one consideration, not a requirement to claim a particular market or partner where none exists. If you are seeking international co-producers, the entry asks for target regions or territories and partner types, and whether discussions are already underway. Give accurate information about those discussions and make clear what remains open.

Check rights and prior submissions

  • Make sure all submitted footage and other materials are cleared for use. IDFA may disqualify a project that uses copyrighted material without authorization.
  • A project entered to IDFA or Docs for Sale 2026 was not eligible for IDFA Forum 2026. Recheck any edition-specific restrictions when a future call opens rather than assuming the 2026 rule automatically carries forward.
  • The entry page states that a project cannot be withdrawn after selection. Consider that commitment before submitting.

Rights clearance applies to the material you send, including the visual sample, rather than only to the finished film. If a clip includes copyrighted material or material controlled by another rights holder, resolve the permission question before using it in the entry. An application is not a substitute for a clearance agreement.

Choose one Forum program

You may apply to one program, and the choice should reflect the project’s stage, form, and immediate needs. As IDFA puts it, “At IDFA Forum, you can apply to one program, depending on your project’s stage and needs.” If you are unsure which route fits, IDFA advises contacting the Forum team.

Before selecting, compare four things: how developed the project is, whether it is linear or immersive/interactive, whether you need partners or financing, and what kind of visual material you can provide. Do not choose solely because a program name sounds suitable; match the actual work and materials to the program description in the current checklist.

Program Best fit Key requirements or limits
Forum Presentations (Pitch & Roundtable) Projects in development or production seeking co-production, financing, or creative partners A producer must be attached. Visual material is recommended; the 2026 checklist allowed up to 10 minutes from the current project, or up to 10 minutes of relevant previous work if current footage was unavailable. The 2026 page stated no restriction on financing already in place.
DocLab Forum Immersive and interdisciplinary projects exploring documentary storytelling through forms such as XR, interactive, and performative work Linear projects intended for cinema or broadcast are not eligible, except linear VR. The 2026 checklist requested a trailer, teaser, pitch deck, or other sample showing the concept, form, or visual approach, plus a sample of the presentation or pitch.
Rough Cut Presentations Projects with rough-cut material ready to present The 2026 checklist allowed up to 20 minutes of rough-cut material, as a selected clip or a full rough cut with viewing timecodes. Selected projects had to deliver the full rough cut by October 26, 2026.

For a future edition, confirm these program definitions and material limits in that edition’s checklist; the detailed limits above are from the 2026 call. In particular, do not apply to Forum Presentations merely because the project is unfinished, or to Rough Cut Presentations unless rough-cut material is ready. The 2026 descriptions distinguish projects looking for partners from work with a rough cut to show.

DocLab is the relevant route to examine when the documentary experience is immersive, interactive, or performative rather than a linear film intended for cinema or broadcast. Linear VR is the stated exception to the exclusion of linear cinema- or broadcast-intended projects. For a hybrid project or an unusual presentation form, use the current program description and ask the Forum team if the fit is unclear; the public guidance does not supply a separate decision tree for every hybrid case.

Prepare the project-entry form

The 2026 checklist identifies the information applicants were asked to provide. Preparing it in advance can help you make the program choice and submission more coherent. Keep the facts consistent across the form, logline, and visual sample: together they should clarify what the project is, where it stands, who it is for, and what it needs next.

  1. Write the project basics. Provide the working title and a logline of no more than 30 words. The cap is short enough that it is worth checking the count rather than relying on an estimate. Focus the logline on the project itself, not on background material the longer description can explain.
  2. Explain the project’s audience and route to viewers. Select the relevant themes, describe the intended audience, and say how you expect the project to reach viewers. The form asks both who you hope will watch and how you expect to reach them; do not leave the route-to-viewers question implicit in a description of the subject.
  3. Describe the partnership you need, if relevant. Indicate whether you are seeking international co-producers, which regions or territories you are targeting, what kinds of partners you seek, and whether co-production discussions are already underway. Be specific about the needs and status of discussions, and avoid presenting exploratory contact as an agreed partnership.
  4. List relevant industry activity. Include connected training programs, labs, pitching events, and other industry activities. For each, provide the year, event or program name, city where applicable, and project title if it differed from the current one. This helps distinguish the project’s history from activity attached to a previous working title.
  5. Add a Vimeo link to relevant visual material. Select a sample that helps the reader understand the project and meets the chosen program’s requirements. Test that the link works and that the intended sample is accessible; a link that cannot be viewed cannot communicate the project’s approach.

Build a simple pre-submission check around these requested fields: title and word-counted logline; themes and audience; audience reach; partner needs and any ongoing discussions; prior labs or industry activities with dates and locations where relevant; and the program-specific sample. That does not add extra official requirements, but it reduces the risk of overlooking an item named in the checklist.

Prepare visual materials for your program

For the 2026 call, visual materials had to be subtitled in English unless the spoken language was English. The checklist specified different samples by program, so do not assume that one video format or length works for every route. Confirm the exact specifications for the edition you enter, including any later delivery instructions for selected teams.

  • Forum Presentations: Up to 10 minutes from the current project. If no current-project footage was available, applicants could submit up to 10 minutes of relevant previous work.
  • DocLab Forum: A trailer, teaser, pitch deck, or other sample conveying the project’s concept, form, or visual approach. Applicants should also upload a sample of the presentation or pitch.
  • Rough Cut Presentations: Up to 20 minutes. If submitting the full rough cut, include viewing timecodes. Selected projects were required to deliver the full rough cut by October 26, 2026.
  • Images: High-resolution landscape images in JPG format, at least 3,000 pixels wide.

The sample should help the selection committee understand the work in the form it is being proposed. For a Forum Presentations application using previous work because current footage is unavailable, the checklist permits that alternative, but make sure the submitted material is relevant to the project. For a DocLab application, the options are not limited to a conventional film clip: the sample can communicate concept, form, or visual approach, and the checklist separately asks for a sample of the presentation or pitch.

For Rough Cut Presentations, distinguish between sending a selected segment and submitting the full rough cut. The 2026 checklist allowed either up to 20 minutes of rough-cut material or a full rough cut with viewing timecodes; selected projects then had to provide the full rough cut by October 26, 2026. That later delivery date is a post-selection commitment, not a reason to assume a future edition will use the same date.

Check that links open correctly and that the selected sample represents the project’s current direction. Check subtitle language, running time, image orientation, pixel width, and JPG format against the checklist. For a future application, follow the next edition’s checklist if its specifications differ from these 2026 requirements.

Know what selected projects must provide later

Selection is followed by additional preparation. The 2026 checklist said selected teams would complete a later form with publication copy and team information. Its limits were:

  • Logline: up to 30 words.
  • Synopsis: up to 300 words.
  • Project description: up to 600 words.
  • Biographies and team information: up to 350 words.

The later form also requested a short paragraph about the one-on-one meetings the team wanted and what it hoped to gain, publishable visual materials, and information about the two team members representing the project. These are post-selection materials, distinct from the initial entry information.

It is useful to think about meetings before applying, even though the specific meeting paragraph is requested later. Ask what kind of conversation would move the project forward and which partner profiles would be relevant. After selection, the team can translate that into a concise explanation of desired one-on-one meetings and goals. The 2026 checklist also limited project representation information to two team members, so plan who will represent the project if it is selected.

Budget for the 2026 fees

The 2026 entry administration fee was €30 excluding VAT. If selected, a project paid a presentation fee of €475, or €574.75 including 21% VAT. These are 2026 fees; confirm the amount and tax treatment for the edition you apply to.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stated presentation fee included the Forum presentation, inclusion in the official online and print selection catalogue, curated one-on-one meetings, two Forum accreditations for the project team, networking events in Amsterdam, access to IDFA’s Industry Program, and online access to accredited guest profiles and contact details. IDFA said fee exemptions or discounts might be available where the main producer was from and lived in a listed country; teams should confirm eligibility directly with IDFA.

Budget for the two fee stages separately: the entry administration fee is associated with submitting, while the presentation fee applies if the project is selected. The latter is not simply a presentation slot; the listed package also includes the catalogue, curated meetings, two team accreditations, networking, Industry Program access, and online guest-profile and contact access. Do not assume that the selected-project fee will be waived or discounted. The 2026 information described possible exemptions or discounts for teams whose main producer was from and lived in a listed country, so confirm whether the producer and country meet the current terms.

Understand selection and what happens if you are not selected

Eligibility is only the starting point. The committee considers artistic qualities and the project’s readiness, context, team, and prospects for international engagement. Because IDFA does not publish a full scoring rubric or weights on the pages reviewed, applicants cannot infer a guaranteed selection formula from the listed considerations.

IDFA says it cannot provide feedback to projects that are not selected because it receives a high volume of entries. Build your application around a clear artistic direction, a persuasive account of the project’s next steps, and materials that make the work’s form and stage easy to understand; do not treat any one element as a guarantee.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K with Voice Remote - HDR10+ & Dolby Vision
  • Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
  • Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Also account for the commitments attached to selection before submitting. The entry page says a project cannot be withdrawn after selection, and the selected-project process requires additional publication copy and team information. Rough Cut Presentations added a full-rough-cut delivery deadline in the 2026 checklist. These details make it sensible to confirm that the team can follow through before submitting, particularly if the project is in a changing production phase.

Do not confuse project entry with Forum accreditation

Forum accreditation is a separate application for industry professionals who want to attend, rather than present a project for selection. The listed eligible professional groups include independent producers, financiers, commissioning editors, sales agents, distributors, film-fund and MEDIA Desk representatives, platforms, NGOs, and other organizations supporting film.

Registration does not guarantee accreditation. The 2026 accreditation page said capacity was limited and generally only one representative per production company or affiliated companies would receive access. Its listed deadline was October 10, 2026, which has passed. Check the accreditation page for the next edition’s dates and eligibility rather than using the project-entry form.

The project-entry route and accreditation route answer different questions. If you want your film or immersive project considered for a live presentation, use the project-entry call. If you are an eligible industry professional seeking to attend without submitting a project, check accreditation terms. A selected project’s stated presentation fee included two Forum accreditations for its team, but that is separate from the selection-based accreditation application for other professionals.

Consider IDFA Project Space only if it matches your needs

IDFA Project Space is a separate development program, not another route into the Forum. Its page says 2026 applications are closed and expected to reopen at the end of the year. It is for directors making their first or second feature documentary and asks for a logline, synopsis, project description, visual approach, and recommendation letters from experienced film professionals. Check Project Space’s own eligibility terms and dates before applying.

This distinction matters if you are looking for development support rather than an industry presentation opportunity. Project Space has a stated first- or second-feature focus and its own requested materials, including recommendation letters. It should not be treated as an alternate Forum program or as a way to submit the same project through the Forum application.

A practical timeline for a future Forum application

  1. When the next call is announced: Read the official project-entry page and that edition’s checklist. Confirm deadlines, formats, word and runtime limits, and fees rather than assuming the 2026 details carry forward.
  2. Before drafting: Confirm eligibility, rights clearance, and that the project is not excluded by another submission. Choose the one program that best fits its stage, format, and needs.
  3. While preparing the entry: Draft the logline and project information, identify the partners you need, gather your industry history, and prepare program-specific visual materials with English subtitles where required.
  4. Before submission: Check the entry form against the current checklist, test the Vimeo link, verify image dimensions and format, and submit before the published deadline.
  5. If selected: Prepare the additional publication copy, team information, meeting goals, and any further materials requested. For Rough Cut Presentations, meet the edition’s delivery date for the full rough cut.

For the 2026 edition, the project-entry window was June 1–July 23, 2026, and is now closed. The Forum itself is scheduled for November 15–18, 2026, during the festival dates of November 12–22. Those dates show how the 2026 cycle was arranged, but they do not establish when the next call will open. The next official project-entry page is the authority for future dates and requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IDFA Forum 2026 application still open?

No. The 2026 project-entry call ran from June 1 through July 23, 2026, and is closed. The official pages reviewed do not establish the next project-entry window, so check the current IDFA Forum project-entry page for future dates.

What kinds of documentary projects can apply to the IDFA Forum?

IDFA considers creative documentaries for theatrical distribution, television broadcasting, or other platforms. Eligible formats include one-off feature-length or TV films, series, and immersive or interactive projects in development, production, or post-production. Short films are not eligible.

Can I apply to more than one IDFA Forum program?

No. IDFA says applicants can apply to one program, chosen according to the project’s stage and needs. The 2026 options included Forum Presentations, DocLab Forum, and Rough Cut Presentations.

Do I need a producer attached to apply?

The 2026 guidance says a producer must be attached for Forum Presentations. Check the current edition’s program requirements for any changes or requirements that apply to other programs.

What visual materials did the 2026 application require?

Requirements varied by program. Forum Presentations allowed up to 10 minutes of current-project footage, or relevant previous work if current footage was unavailable. DocLab requested a trailer, teaser, pitch deck, or other sample conveying concept, form, or visual approach, plus a sample of the presentation or pitch. Rough Cut Presentations allowed up to 20 minutes, with viewing timecodes if submitting the full rough cut. Landscape JPG images had to be at least 3,000 pixels wide, and visual material had to be subtitled in English unless its spoken language was English.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much did it cost to apply to the IDFA Forum in 2026?

The 2026 entry administration fee was €30 excluding VAT. Selected projects paid a presentation fee of €475, or €574.75 including 21% VAT. Confirm the fees for the edition you apply to; IDFA said fee exemptions or discounts might be available when the main producer was from and lived in a listed country.

Is Forum accreditation the same as applying with a project?

No. Project entry is a request for selection to present a project. Forum accreditation is a separate, selection-based process for eligible industry professionals who want to attend. The 2026 accreditation deadline was October 10, and registration did not guarantee access.

Can an applicant receive feedback if the project is not selected?

IDFA says it cannot provide feedback to projects that are not selected because of the high volume of entries.

The Bottom Line

For a future IDFA Forum application, verify the new edition’s dates and checklist first, then submit to one program that fits the project’s stage and form. Clear the rights to every submitted asset, meet that program’s visual-material specifications, and prepare for the stated fees and post-selection commitments. The 2026 call is closed; its requirements are a planning reference, not a guarantee of next year’s rules.
