To have donation messages read aloud during a live stream, enable text-to-speech (TTS) for the tip alert in your alert service, add that service’s alert widget or overlay to your streaming scene, and test the result—including its audio—in your streaming software. The exact dashboard steps depend on whether you use Streamlabs, StreamElements, or another provider.
Before you begin
Streaming dashboards often call donations “tips.” The TTS setting belongs to the tip alert event, and the matching alert widget or overlay must be active in the scene you broadcast. A dashboard setting by itself does not put an alert into your live output.
- Identify the tipping page and alert service your viewers use. Configure that service rather than a different provider.
- Have access to the service dashboard and the streaming scene where alerts should appear.
- Decide how to handle message length, minimum tip amounts, profanity, and spam before allowing donor text to be read aloud.
No special microphone, capture card, headset, or stream controller is required for this alert setup; the documented workflows use software settings and an alert source.
Set up donation TTS with Streamlabs
- Add the alert source to your scene. In OBS or other streaming software, copy the Alert Box widget URL from Streamlabs and add it as a Browser Source. In Streamlabs Desktop, use its native Alert Box source; the Streamlabs OBS plugin is another documented option.
- Open the alert settings. Sign in at Streamlabs.com and open Alert Box.
- Choose the event. Select Tips (or Bits if you also want TTS for Bits), then open Text-to-Speech.
- Choose controls. Set a minimum tip amount if you want only qualifying tips read aloud, select a voice, and configure the spam filter. Streamlabs’ guide says its TTS offers over 50 voices, including multiple languages; this is the vendor’s figure in its November 5, 2025 guide and may change.
- Enable and save. Turn on TTS for the event and save your changes.
- Test the broadcast path. Use the dashboard test dropdown, Live Preview, or the streaming software’s test widgets. Confirm that the alert appears and that speech is audible in the stream output, not just in a dashboard preview.
Streamlabs says its profanity filter is off by default and recommends starting at Low or Medium. Its alert settings also offer default and custom profanity filters, including options to replace, hide, or suppress alerts containing blocked words. Test the chosen level with legitimate messages as well as unwanted ones. Streamlabs says Alert Box itself is free; it describes Ultra as an optional way to access a larger theme library, not a requirement for donation TTS. Set up donation TTS with StreamElements
- Create or edit an overlay. In StreamElements, open the overlay you want to use and add an AlertBox widget.
- Configure the tip alert. Open the tip alert settings, find TTS settings, enable text-to-speech, and choose a voice.
- Check alert variations. Review any variations as well as the base tip alert, because a variation can override the base configuration.
- Connect tipping. Make sure tipping is configured and connected to the page viewers will use. StreamElements names PayPal and SE.Pay as options; provider availability and eligibility can vary.
- Set message safeguards. Review provider settings such as minimum and maximum amounts, maximum message length, and moderation controls. If the overlay is separate from your streaming software, add its URL to OBS as a Browser Source.
- Test in the actual scene. Trigger a test alert, confirm its visual display and speech, and check that the overlay is active in the scene you plan to broadcast.
StreamElements documents standard and custom profanity protection, message filters, repeated-character TTS anti-spam, and optional manual approval of tips. Filtered events remain in the activity feed but do not trigger an alert; tip moderation settings do not affect fund transfers. Neither method removes the need to test speech through your streaming software. A preview can look correct while audio routing or browser-source settings prevent viewers from hearing it.
Moderate messages before they reach the stream
TTS turns viewer-submitted text into live audio, so an unfiltered message can be offensive or disruptive. Set safeguards before enabling freeform messages, rather than waiting for a bad alert to happen.

- Set a minimum amount if you want to limit which tips can trigger speech.
- Use profanity and custom-word filters, and decide whether blocked alerts should be replaced, hidden, or suppressed where those choices are available.
- Enable spam controls and message-length limits. StreamElements also documents repeated-character TTS anti-spam.
- Consider manual approval where your provider offers it, especially if messages are read aloud automatically.
- Test filter behavior with sample messages, including legitimate text that might be caught accidentally.
Troubleshoot donation TTS
