Set up scene transitions in your streaming software—not in YouTube Live Control Room. In OBS Studio, choose a transition in Scene Transitions and set its duration; in Streamlabs Desktop, you can add a Motion transition. YouTube handles the live broadcast, while the encoder controls how scenes change on air.
Set up transitions in OBS Studio
Scenes are layouts made from sources such as a webcam, game capture, or media. Build the scenes you need, then choose how OBS moves between them.
- Create your scenes. In OBS, add a scene for each part of the broadcast, such as an opening, main content, break, or ending. Add and arrange the relevant sources in each scene. See the OBS scenes and sources guide.
- Choose a transition. In the Scene Transitions section, select a transition. Cut and Fade are available from first launch; OBS also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. See OBS scene transitions.
- Set its duration. Use the duration control in the transition section. The appropriate timing depends on the content and pacing; there is no universal best duration.
- Switch scenes and observe the result. Select another scene and check how the chosen transition looks and feels. Test changes before going live so you can adjust the style or timing.
Preview a scene before it goes live
Turn on Studio Mode in OBS when you want to prepare the next scene without immediately showing it to viewers. The current live scene stays on air while you work on the next scene in the edit area. Click Transition when you are ready to switch. OBS says viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode is enabled.
You can also configure a Quick Transition or hotkey for switching scenes. Quick Transitions let you make a transition and duration available from Studio Mode; OBS supports multiple entries with different durations. Check your assigned hotkeys before a broadcast to avoid triggering an unintended switch.

Choose a transition that fits the change

Consider the visual style, how long the change takes, whether you need to preview the next scene, and whether you prefer a button or hotkey. These are workflow considerations, not evidence that a particular transition improves engagement or retention.
Add a Motion transition in Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs Desktop documents a Motion transition that can animate sources shared between scenes. The support article was dated April 25, 2025; its content-hub version says it was last updated October 2, 2025. Interface labels may vary by installed version, so follow the labels shown in your app if they differ.

- Open the Scene Transition menu.
- Choose Add Transition.
- Select Motion as the transition type.
- Adjust Duration to control how long a shared source takes to move between positions, and set Acceleration to shape how it speeds up or slows down.
A source present in both scenes animates from its position in one scene to its position in the other. A source present in only one scene zooms in or out. See the Streamlabs scene transitions guide.
What YouTube Live Control Room does
Use YouTube Studio’s Go live flow and Live Control Room to create or manage the broadcast. Configure the scene transition in OBS, Streamlabs Desktop, or the encoder you use; YouTube’s live controls do not replace those transition settings. YouTube also documents horizontal and vertical live-stream options, but those affect the stream format rather than the scene-transition effect. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
