If you mean a small player that floats on your own screen while you use another app, that is a viewer-side feature—not an inset that changes the stream for everyone.
Broadcast inset or floating player?
A broadcast picture-in-picture layout is composed in streaming software before the video reaches viewers. Everyone watching the stream sees the main image and the inset in the same positions. OBS scenes hold the sources, while their order and placement determine what appears on top.
A floating playback window is different: it is a feature of the viewer’s device or playback app. Android, for example, documents PiP as an app-side platform feature; it does not create an inset in a live broadcast. Google’s Android PiP documentation explains that viewer-side behavior.
How to add picture-in-picture in OBS
- Create or choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream or create a new one. A scene is the composition that will be sent to the broadcast.
- Add the main picture. Add the game, display capture, window, camera, or other video source that should fill the background.
- Add the inset source. For a webcam, add a Video Capture Source and select the camera in its properties. OBS also supports capture cards as video-capture sources. See the OBS Video Capture Sources guide.
- Layer and place the inset. In the preview canvas, select the second source and drag its handles to resize it, then move it to a corner or another clear area. Check the source order: the inset must be above the main source to appear over it. OBS’s Sources Guide covers source ordering, positioning, and adding sources.
- Preview the composition. Confirm the inset is visible, important content is not covered, and the intended video and audio sources are active before going live.
OBS’s webcam walkthrough also describes adding a camera source, positioning and resizing it, and applying filters: How do I add my webcam? The OBS documentation cited here was published in 2022; interface layout and labels can change between releases, so check the version installed on your computer.

Choose the right inset source
- USB webcam: A straightforward option for a presenter inset when the camera is supported by both your computer and OBS. Add it as a Video Capture Source.
- External HDMI camera: A capture card may be needed to make the camera feed available to the streaming computer. Compatibility depends on the device, operating system, drivers, and video mode or format. OBS documents Windows DirectShow support and notes that Blackmagic devices require an appropriate mode and format. Check the capture-source documentation and your device’s compatibility details before buying hardware.
- Browser-based visual element: OBS Browser Source can load a URL or local file into a scene. It is available on Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux. It can display web overlays or other browser content, but it is not a camera-capture source. Details: OBS Browser Source.
- Existing screen or window source: If the second image is already available to OBS as a screen or window source, the layout itself is a software task; a capture card is not required just to make an inset.
Do you need a capture card?
Not necessarily. A USB webcam or an existing OBS-compatible screen or window source can provide the inset without a capture card. An external HDMI camera may need one, depending on how its signal can be connected to the streaming computer. Before choosing hardware, verify operating-system support, drivers, and the resolution and frame-rate formats supported by the camera and capture device. Exact compatibility varies by device and platform.

If your documentary stream uses uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not create a camera-based PiP layout; compose an inset in OBS when the broadcast needs one.
