If you downloaded a song from Spotify, use Spotify’s download feature to play it offline; it is already in Spotify and cannot be added as a regular audio file. If you have an audio file from another source, add it as a Local File in Spotify. Local Files stay on the devices where you store them—they are not uploaded to your Spotify account. See Spotify’s Local Files instructions.
Add downloaded audio files on a Windows PC or Mac
Use Spotify’s desktop app and give it access to the folder containing your legally stored audio files. The names of individual folders may differ between Windows and macOS, but the Spotify controls are the same.
- Open the Spotify desktop app and select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings, then scroll to Library.
- Turn on Show Local Files.
- Under Show songs from, enable a listed folder or select Add a source and choose the folder where your music is stored.
- Open Your Library and select Local Files.
If the folder is not listed or its tracks do not appear, check that it still exists and that Spotify has permission to read it. The desktop setup is documented on Spotify’s support page.
Add files on an iPhone or iPad
On iOS, enabling Local Files is only part of the setup: the audio file also needs to be available in a location Spotify can read. Spotify describes placing files in its folder in the Files app, under On My iPhone.

- In the Files app, copy or move the audio file into the Spotify folder under On My iPhone.
- Return to Spotify and open Your Library → Local Files.
If the audio is on a Mac, Spotify’s instructions also describe transferring it through iCloud or Finder; Windows users can use iTunes file transfer. A file that remains only in a cloud location may not be available for playback. See Spotify’s iOS and mobile transfer instructions.
If the Spotify folder disappears from On My iPhone after its Help file is deleted, Spotify says restarting the app can make the folder appear again.
Add files on an Android phone or tablet
- Open Spotify, tap your profile picture, and choose Settings and privacy.
- Tap Apps and devices and turn on Local audio files.
- Use a file-management or storage app to make sure the songs are downloaded onto the device, not merely listed in cloud storage.
- Open Your Library → Local Files in Spotify.
You can also transfer audio from a Windows PC over USB: connect the phone, allow data access when prompted, open its storage on the computer, and copy the files onto the device. The precise storage folder varies by Android version and manufacturer. If Spotify cannot find the files, check its media or file-access permission. See Spotify’s mobile Local Files instructions.
Add Local Files to a playlist
- Open Your Library → Local Files.
- Create a playlist or open one you already have.
- Add the local tracks to the playlist.
A playlist organizes tracks; it does not upload the audio or make it available on every device. On another phone or computer, the underlying files generally need to be present and readable on that device. Do not rely on older instructions that promise desktop-to-phone transfer just because both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network; current guidance does not establish that as a dependable method. See the Spotify Community Local Files FAQ.

Play the songs offline
For Spotify catalog music
Find a song, album, or playlist in Spotify and use its download control. These are Spotify-managed offline downloads for playback inside the Spotify app, not exportable MP3 files. Spotify’s offline-download page says the app must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain offline access. The feature is associated with Premium; see Spotify’s offline listening details.
For Local Files
Keep the actual audio file on the device you want to use. A local track in a playlist is not necessarily downloaded to another device, and selecting a playlist download cannot supply a file that is missing or inaccessible there. Spotify Community troubleshooting likewise notes that the file needs to be physically present on the playback device: Local files not working.
Fix missing or grayed-out Local Files
Work through these checks in order, starting on the device where you expect to play the song:
- Enable Local Files. On desktop, turn on Show Local Files in Settings → Library. On mobile, turn on Local audio files in Settings and privacy → Apps and devices.
- Check access permissions. Confirm Spotify can read the computer folder or has the needed media or file access on your phone.
- Download the file itself. A cloud-drive entry is not enough if the audio is still cloud-only; save it to device storage first.
- Check the location. On desktop, make sure the selected source folder still contains the file. On iPhone or iPad, check the Spotify folder under On My iPhone.
- Check the format. A file can be visible yet fail to play if its codec, container, or DRM is incompatible. Try a DRM-free copy in a common audio format such as MP3.
- Check for changes to the file. If it was moved, renamed, or removed, Spotify may no longer be able to locate it. Restore it to the selected folder or add the new location as a source.
- Refresh Spotify. Restart the app and confirm it is up to date. If the file is in a playlist, remove the unavailable entry and add the track again from Local Files.
- Check the playback destination. A Web Player, smart speaker, TV, game console, or Spotify Connect target may not be able to read a file stored on your phone or computer. Try playback in the app on the device holding the file.
If those checks fail, Spotify recommends updating the app, removing Local Files from playlists, repeating setup, and, if necessary, reinstalling Spotify. Reinstalling means Spotify’s catalog downloads and podcasts must be downloaded again. See Spotify’s troubleshooting instructions.

File formats and DRM
Spotify’s visible Local Files instructions do not provide a complete current codec list. MP3 is a practical format to try, but compatibility can depend on a file’s encoding and contents. Spotify Community guidance notes that video-containing MP4 files and iTunes lossless M4A files are not supported in the relevant workflow; treat that as community guidance, not a universal format specification. The Community FAQ has the relevant notes.
If a file will not play, use a legally obtained, DRM-free copy converted to a broadly compatible audio format. Do not try to bypass DRM; Spotify Local Files are for audio you are legally entitled to store and play.
Will Local Files sync between devices?
Do not assume they will. Spotify playlists can appear on multiple devices, but Local Files are not converted into cloud tracks by adding them to a playlist. Put or transfer a copy of each file onto every device where you want to play it, then enable Local Files there. The former same-network sync method should not be treated as a reliable current workflow; see the Spotify Community FAQ.
