To add background music to a prerecorded store promo on YouTube Live, play the promo and music together through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that combined audio-and-video output to YouTube. In OBS, add the promo as a Media Source and add music as a separate source if you need independent volume control. Before broadcasting, confirm that the music license covers the store promotion, livestream, territories and any saved archive.
Choose music cleared for the promotion and livestream
“Background music” is not exempt from copyright rules, and calling a track “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that it is cleared for your use. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the provider, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Start with YouTube’s Audio Library
YouTube says it knows the tracks in its Audio Library to be copyright-safe on YouTube. Check the individual track’s license: some tracks are under Creative Commons and require attribution in the video description. YouTube does not vouch for music from other libraries. If the promo will also be used outside YouTube, or the store needs broader commercial rights, verify that the track’s license covers those uses; YouTube does not provide legal guidance on off-platform use.
Check every intended use
Before selecting a track, confirm that the permission covers commercial store promotion, live broadcast, the relevant territories and retention of an archived stream or video-on-demand copy, if you intend to keep one. If any of those rights are unclear, obtain clarification from the rights holder or choose music with terms that expressly cover the use.

Set up the promo and music in OBS
YouTube receives the encoder’s combined audio-and-video program. OBS can play local media files, including common formats such as MP4 video and MP3 or WAV audio; its Media Sources documentation explains the source options.
Use separate sources for adjustable music volume
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the store promo.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name, then select the prerecorded promo file.
- If the promo should repeat, enable Loop in the Media Source properties. If it should play once, leave looping off and confirm what the scene should show or play when the file ends.
- Add another Media Source for the music file. Keep the promo’s own audio only if it is wanted; otherwise, mute or remove that audio so it does not unintentionally double the music.
- Use the OBS audio mixer to set the music level separately from the promo. There is no single correct balance for every ad: listen to the actual program and make sure the spoken offer, if any, remains intelligible.
Use one combined file for a fixed mix
If the music level and timing are final and you do not need to adjust them during the broadcast, combine the promo video and music in an editing application, then add that rendered file as the Media Source. This reduces live mixing decisions. Check that the finished file has the intended audio, duration and ending before loading it into OBS.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion; use the server address shown for the selected stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start the encoder output from OBS and wait for the incoming stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Test the complete output before going live
Do not rely only on the OBS preview. Confirm the program YouTube is receiving, including both picture and sound.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check the relative level of promo audio and music.
- Watch representative motion in the promo, not just a still frame, and confirm the picture behaves as expected.
- Check that the music begins and ends at the intended points and that the promo either loops or stops as planned.
- Confirm the stream health indicators show no issue, then monitor the live output and YouTube Studio notices during the broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates include audio guidance such as AAC or MP3, 128 kbps for stereo, and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling. These are encoder-output recommendations, not a substitute for listening to the actual stream.
- Where practical, check the live output on a target viewing device as well as in the control room.
YouTube’s stream health guidance explains the indicators to monitor. After the event, review any saved stream for copyright notices or claims.

Respond to copyright warnings during the stream
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party matches. A match can lead to a temporary interruption or termination. Having a license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming if the rights holder’s Content ID system has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube advises: “If you’ve licensed third-party content to use in your stream, ask the owner of the content to add your channel to their allowlist through Content ID.” See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
If a warning appears, follow the notice in YouTube Studio and resolve the rights issue; do not assume that labeling the music, lowering its volume or describing it as background music will clear the match. For licensed third-party music, contact the rights holder about allowlisting the channel through Content ID. If you cannot establish permission or resolve the match, stop using the track.

Troubleshoot common problems
