To add an AI background, open your video app’s background or effects controls, generate a scene from a prompt if that option is available, then preview and apply it. Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams also let you choose or upload ordinary background images; those are virtual backgrounds, but they are not necessarily AI-generated. Availability and exact controls vary by app, account, device, region and administrator settings.
AI-generated backgrounds versus virtual backgrounds
A call app first separates you from the camera image, then replaces the visible surroundings with a scene. Some apps can generate that scene from a text prompt. Others offer preset scenes or let you upload an image. A virtual background can therefore be useful without having been generated by AI.
Before joining, look for the app’s background or effects controls. In a meeting, look in video settings or the meeting’s actions menu. Preview the result before applying it, since framing and cropping can affect what other participants see.
Add an AI background in Google Meet
- Before joining: Open the meeting in Meet and select Backgrounds and effects below your self-view.
- During a meeting: Open Video settings beside the microphone, then choose Backgrounds and effects.
- Under backgrounds, look for the generative backgrounds option and select Generate a background. Choose or describe a scene using the controls shown, then preview and apply it.
Meet also supports background blur, existing backgrounds and personal image uploads. Selecting an effect turns on the camera. Google documents that backgrounds and effects depend on client type, account type and Workspace administrator settings. On computers, browser effects have requirements including WebGL and graphics acceleration. Google also lists eligible Workspace editions and countries or regions for cloud processing of uploaded or AI-generated images and blur. If the option is absent, check the current Google Meet background and effects help and ask your Workspace administrator about policy and eligibility.

Google Workspace Updates announced on March 6, 2025 an upgraded Gemini image-generation model for Meet custom backgrounds and preset styles including professional office, bookshelf, stylish living room, cozy living room, tropical beach, fantasy castle and sci-fi spaceship. That dated update is not a guarantee that the feature or every style is available to every account today; check the controls in your own Meet account.
Add an AI background in Zoom
- Open virtual background settings in the Zoom desktop app, or open the meeting controls and find the virtual background settings there.
- If the option is available, select Generate next to Create AI virtual background.
- Enter a description, generate the image, preview it and apply it. You can also select an image or short video as a virtual background, or use blur.
The AI option must be enabled, and the device must meet Zoom’s system requirements. Background effects—especially video or backgrounds used without a green screen—can use more system resources. Zoom says: “A virtual background with a green screen provides the best virtual background effect and uses fewer system resources during the meeting.” A green screen is an optional aid, not a universal requirement or a way to enable AI generation by itself. See Zoom’s instructions for changing a virtual background for current settings and requirements.

Add a background in Microsoft Teams
- Before joining: Open the meeting’s background effects controls and choose an effect or add a local image, where available.
- During a meeting: Select More actions > Video effects and settings.
- Select a background, preview it and apply it. If the Decorate AI-generated effect is available, use it to create a scene.
Microsoft’s personal-use instructions also describe choosing an effect or adding a local image before joining. The feature is not available on every device. For the personal-use background and AR filters flow, Microsoft lists minimum requirements of 2 GB RAM and a dual-core processor from 2018 or later. Mobile background requirements vary by platform, so check the current support page for your device. See Microsoft’s Teams meeting background instructions and its personal-use meeting background and filter instructions.
If the AI option is missing or the call slows down
The generation control is missing
- Check that you are using the app, account and device that support the feature, and that the app is up to date.
- In Meet, check account eligibility, browser requirements, country or region availability and Workspace administrator settings.
- In Zoom, confirm that the feature is enabled and the device meets the system requirements.
- In Teams, try a supported device; Microsoft notes that the feature may not be available on every device.
- If prompt-based generation is unavailable, use a preset, upload a suitable image or choose blur if those controls are offered.
Video is choppy or the device heats up
Background processing can add a load to your device. Try a static image or blur, close other demanding apps, or turn off effects. Google warns that effects may slow a device and use extra battery; Zoom says some background modes require more system resources. A green screen may improve separation or reduce resource use in Zoom, but whether it helps depends on your setup.

The background looks wrong to other participants
Check camera framing, lighting and the preview before joining. Google notes that your self-view is mirrored while others see the correct orientation, and that the image may be cropped for other participants. Leave enough space around your head and shoulders so the replacement does not cover them awkwardly.
A private detail remains visible
Do not treat a background effect as a privacy guarantee. A person, object or detail can remain visible around an imperfect edge or in a reflection. Google and Microsoft both warn that sensitive information may still be visible; remove or cover anything confidential before the call.

StreamNeo is unrelated to adding a background to a video call: it keeps a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos, not by going live from a camera. If your separate goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
