Run an encoder on the Contabo VPS, give it the still image and audio files in the order you want, and send its combined audio/video output to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube receives one encoded stream—not a JPEG and playlist as separate live inputs. The exact commands depend on your VPS operating system, encoder build, and media formats, so test the implementation on the selected instance rather than relying on an unverified one-size-fits-all command.
How the image-and-playlist stream works
The VPS is the machine doing the encoding. The image and audio files must be available to the encoder there; it combines them into a video stream and transmits that stream to YouTube. YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance describes connecting an encoder with a server URL and stream key.
This is different from uploading an image and playlist separately to YouTube as live tracks. The still image supplies the visual throughout the broadcast, while the encoder plays the audio files as a playlist. The chosen encoder and playlist mechanism determine how files advance, repeat, and handle gaps between tracks.
Prepare YouTube Live and the VPS
1. Create or select the live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event you want the encoder to feed.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or leave it in a shared command example.
- If this is the first time the account is enabling live streaming, allow for YouTube’s stated activation delay of up to 24 hours.
2. Put the media on the VPS
Make the still image and every audio file accessible to the encoder under stable file paths. Before configuring the playlist, check that the files exist, the VPS account running the encoder can read them, and the media formats are supported by the encoder you selected.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Decide the audio order and whether playback should repeat. Confirm that the playlist mechanism actually advances and loops as intended; YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe a particular playlist file format.
- Use an image with dimensions appropriate to the output frame, and verify that the encoder can open it. A static visual does not require a high frame rate merely to look still, but the encoder must still produce a valid video stream.
- Check audio levels and listen for silence, clipping, or unintended gaps between tracks during a test.
Choose the encoder protocol and output settings
For an encoder that supports the RTMP family, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through Google’s servers. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose RTMPS when available and configure the server URL and stream key in the encoder rather than embedding the key in public material.
Resolution and H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not bandwidth guarantees or results from an independent test.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
Select a resolution and frame rate that suit the source and the connection. The VPS needs sustained upload capacity above the selected stream bitrate, with room for operating overhead; a speed test and an extended test stream are more useful than assuming the hosting plan will sustain a particular rate. The available evidence does not establish a Contabo plan’s upload rate or a minimum plan for this workload.

Audio and picture settings
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, stereo at 44.1 kHz, and a stereo audio bitrate of 128 kbps.
- For a standard dynamic-range still-image stream, Rec. 709 is the straightforward color-space choice unless the source and workflow have a specific HDR requirement.
- Use square pixels and progressive scan, which appear among YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
When HLS is appropriate
HLS is a separate ingestion option, not simply another name for RTMPS. Use it only if the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements and you can configure them correctly. YouTube requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments instead of one continuous stream. For an encoder that supports both protocols, RTMPS is the simpler default to consider; HLS may fit a workflow that specifically needs HLS and can meet its segment and playlist rules.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” For this setup, test the actual image and playlist rather than only checking that the encoder connects.
- Start the encoder and confirm that the intended event receives the stream in Live Control Room.
- Check that the still image is visible and framed as expected, and that audio is audible at a sensible level.
- Let the playlist run long enough to confirm its order, transitions, and repeat behavior.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the test is running. Review encoder logs and VPS CPU and network use as well.
- Test for a representative period before depending on unattended operation. A brief successful connection does not establish that the process, network, or playlist will remain healthy over a longer run.
Contabo capacity and process management
A specific Contabo VPS plan, CPU model, bandwidth guarantee, or minimum RAM requirement for this job is not established here. Resource use depends on the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, any available hardware acceleration, and other work on the instance. Check Contabo’s current specifications for the plan you are considering, then validate the workload on that instance with the actual media and output settings.

Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but that does not mean a given VPS exposes compatible hardware. OBS Project’s hardware-encoding guidance also cautions that older-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with its default veryfast preset. Confirm hardware availability and compare the actual output before choosing that route.
Plan how the encoder process is monitored and restarted, but use service-manager or watchdog instructions verified for your operating system and implementation. There is no universally safe restart command independent of those choices. Test that a restart reconnects to the intended YouTube event and resumes the correct playlist position or behavior.
Troubleshooting common failures
Black output or no image
- Check the image path, file permissions, and whether the encoder can decode the image.
- Review the encoder’s input and output configuration to confirm the still image is actually included in the outgoing video.
No audio or the wrong playlist behavior
- Verify playlist paths, file permissions, decoder support, and that the intended audio stream is selected.
- Confirm that audio is included in the outgoing muxed stream, then check the volume and whether the playlist advances or repeats as configured.
Dropped frames or unstable ingestion
- Inspect encoder logs and VPS CPU and network use, and compare the selected bitrate with sustained upload capacity.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators. If necessary, test a lower output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that better fits the connection.
YouTube rejects an HLS stream
Check that the output uses TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. An encoder that cannot satisfy these constraints is not configured for YouTube’s HLS workflow.

The stream ends or the archive is missing
Stopping the encoder’s output ends its contribution to the live stream. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having permission to play audio in a private setting does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for the music and any other material in the playlist, including the rights relevant to live transmission and any intended archive. A still image does not resolve rights issues in the audio.
Also consider whether a repetitive, minimally changed broadcast is suitable for your channel and complies with YouTube’s current monetization and content policies. A technically healthy stream is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility or policy approval. Review YouTube’s current rules for the specific content and use case rather than treating uninterrupted playback as a policy workaround.
