In Windows Media Player Legacy, open Organize > Manage libraries > Music, select Add, choose the folder, then select Include folder and confirm. This adds the folder’s location to the library; it does not move the music files.
First, check which media app you have open
These steps are for Windows Media Player Legacy, the classic player interface. Windows 11 also has a newer app named Media Player. The legacy menu path below is not verified for that newer app, so do not assume its menus are the same. The documented classic workflow comes from a Microsoft Q&A answer posted in 2010: Microsoft Q&A: add a folder to the Windows Media Player library.
Add the folder in Windows Media Player Legacy
- Open Windows Media Player Legacy.
- If it opens in Now Playing mode, switch to the Player Library.
- Select Organize > Manage libraries > Music.
- In the Music Library Locations dialog, select Add.
- Browse to and select the existing folder that contains your music.
- Select Include folder, then confirm with OK.
- Wait for the library to update, then check the Player Library for the tracks.
What adding a folder does—and does not do
A Windows library is a virtual collection of folder locations. Adding a folder includes that location in the library; it does not relocate the folder or its files. Removing a location from a library also does not delete the underlying folder. See Microsoft Learn’s explanation of Windows libraries.
If the music does not appear or play
Check the file format and codec
Windows Media Player 12 supports formats including MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, M4A, and FLAC. Other formats may work if the appropriate codec is installed. If a track is missing or will not play, check its format and any codec requirement; adding its folder alone does not make an unsupported file playable. See Microsoft Support’s Windows Media Player 12 format list.

Check whether you use a Windows N edition
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media features by default. Microsoft provides the Media Feature Pack as an optional feature to restore media functionality. See Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack guidance.
Distinguish File Explorer’s library display from the player’s folder setting
To show libraries in File Explorer’s navigation pane, select View > Navigation pane > Show libraries. That setting only controls whether libraries are visible in File Explorer; it does not add a music folder to Windows Media Player. See Microsoft Support’s File Explorer guidance.
