To add a moderator to a 24/7 YouTube radio station, the channel owner can appoint them in the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. Choose a standard moderator for routine chat cleanup; choose a managing moderator only when someone also needs to change chat settings or manage other standard moderators. A moderator’s role continues until the creator removes them.
Choose the right moderator role
YouTube describes a moderator as “someone who you trust to help build a positive, safe channel experience for your community.” Give people only the permissions they need.

YouTube’s role descriptions do not prescribe a staffing ratio for a continuous station. The appropriate number of people depends on the channel’s audience and the coverage it wants to provide.
Add a moderator in the YouTube app
- Open the station’s live chat in the YouTube app.
- Find a message from the person you want to appoint and open the message menu.
- Select Add as standard moderator or Add as managing moderator, according to the permissions they need.
The app method uses a message from the person being appointed. If you cannot find one, use the YouTube Studio method.

Add a moderator in YouTube Studio
- Open the YouTube Studio app and go to Settings → Community.
- Under the Automated Filters tab, enter the candidate’s channel URL in either the Standard moderator or Managing moderators box.
- Save the change.
Ask the appointee to open the station’s live chat to moderate it. YouTube says the appointment remains in effect until the creator removes the moderator. Interface labels may change over time.
Set up sensible coverage for a continuous station
Appointing a moderator grants access; it does not create round-the-clock coverage. For a 24/7 stream, agree on named coverage periods and handoffs that fit your channel’s needs. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify how many moderators a station needs or set a required schedule.

Make sure each person knows which issues to handle, when to hand over, and who can change chat settings. Reserve managing-moderator access for people trusted to make those broader changes.
Pair human moderation with YouTube’s chat controls
Hold potentially inappropriate messages for review
YouTube can hold messages its systems identify for a moderator to show or hide. If nobody acts, held messages stay hidden. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat on your live stream.” Treat review as an aid, not a guarantee that every unwanted message will be caught.

Use blocked words and slow mode
Configure blocked words in YouTube Studio’s Community settings. Messages containing, or closely matching, those terms can be blocked. In Live Control Room, slow mode adds a wait interval between viewer messages. YouTube says the viewer limit does not apply to the channel owner, moderators, or channel members.
Choose participation modes deliberately
YouTube’s moderator tools include subscriber-only and members-only chat. These modes can limit who participates, so use them only when they fit the station’s community goals.

Remember that chat depends on where viewers watch
YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. A listener using an embedded player may therefore not have the same chat access as someone watching on YouTube’s watch page.

Standard moderators can put a user in timeout for 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or 24 hours. Hiding a user makes that person’s chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers; YouTube says the user is not notified. Choose the action that fits the situation rather than treating every disruption as the same severity.

Troubleshooting moderator setup
- The candidate does not appear in the app menu: The app method requires a message from that person in the live chat. Use Studio instead and enter their channel URL.
- The candidate cannot find the stream chat: Ask them to open the stream’s live chat on YouTube. Chat is not available on embedded players.
- A managing moderator cannot change Studio or Live Control Room settings: That role does not grant access to either destination. Managing moderators can change specified chat controls, but cannot appoint another managing moderator.
- A held message has not appeared in chat: Messages held for review remain hidden unless a moderator chooses to show them.
- The station has gaps in human coverage: YouTube’s appointment feature does not schedule shifts. Set coverage periods and handoffs directly with the people you appoint.
