To show a countdown over a YouTube ambience livestream, add a timer as a source in your streaming software—most commonly an OBS Browser Source—then size and position it over the video. A timer graphic only displays a countdown: it does not pause a viewer’s YouTube playback or end the broadcast. If you mean a timer that pauses your own viewing, use YouTube’s viewer-side Sleep Timer instead.
Choose the timer method that fits your stream
For a ready-made graphic, load a hosted timer page in OBS. If you want to avoid relying on a hosted page, use a local HTML timer page. A timer application that writes its output to a text file is another option, though it adds a separate program to manage.
| Method | Where the timer runs | Useful when | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted timer URL as a Browser Source | A timer webpage inside OBS | You want a ready-made graphic and timer settings | The service must load; check its current terms, availability, pricing and privacy practices. |
| Local HTML timer as a Browser Source | A page on your computer, loaded by OBS | You want to control the local file without relying on a hosted timer page | You need to obtain or create the page and configure it. |
| Timer program writing a text file | An external timer app supplies text to an OBS text source | You want a separate timer program to control the displayed text | There are more components, and compatibility should be checked. |
OBS describes Browser Source as a browser embedded in OBS. It can load a URL or a local file, and its documented default CSS makes the background transparent, removes margins and hides overflow. It is available on Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux. See the OBS Browser Source documentation.
Add a timer graphic in OBS
1. Set up a timer
Decide whether you need a countdown from a duration—such as 45 minutes—or a countdown to a specific clock time. The first is appropriate when the stream should display a chosen run length; the second is better when the intended end is tied to a schedule.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
One hosted example is TimerBox’s OBS timer. Its documented workflow is to configure the timer, copy the OBS source URL, and load it in OBS. TimerBox says its builder and ten free themes do not require an account and have no watermark; some other themes are paid. These are the service’s own claims, and features or pricing may change, so check the page before relying on them. The URL does not set the OBS viewport dimensions for you.
2. Add the source to the scene
- In OBS, select the scene that contains your ambience video.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source. Exact labels can vary by OBS version.
- For a hosted timer, paste its source URL. For a local HTML timer, enable Local file and select the page on your computer.
- For a timer program that writes a text file, add a text source, enable its Read from file option, and select the timer’s output file.
An OBS forum resource documents the text-file approach for Countdown Timer / Stream Timer v4.0. Its listing says it was last updated April 23, 2022; that does not establish compatibility with every current OBS release or operating system. See the OBS forum listing.

3. Set the viewport and position
Enter a width and height suited to the graphic. For a small corner timer, use a compact viewport; for a full-screen countdown slate, use the stream canvas dimensions. In the scene’s source stack, place the timer above the ambience video. Resize and position it in the preview.
Keep the page background transparent when the timer should float over the footage. If you want a full-screen slate, use a timer page or design with a solid background instead. Preview the digits against both bright and dark parts of the video so the timer remains legible.

4. Check what happens when the source reloads
A duration countdown and a countdown to a fixed clock time can behave differently after a reload. TimerBox says its basic duration timer starts again at its full duration after reload unless its resume option is enabled. OBS also has source-visibility and scene behavior that can unload or refresh a source. If the original end time matters, inspect those settings and test the timer rather than assuming it will continue from where it left off.
5. Test the complete scene before going live
- Start the timer and confirm that the digits change as expected.
- Switch away from the scene and back, then hide and show the source.
- Reload the source if that is part of your planned workflow, and check whether the countdown resumes or restarts.
- Preview the scene at the stream canvas size and verify the overlay is readable over the moving ambience footage.
YouTube separately recommends testing its Live Control Room away-slate overlay before going live. That is a different feature from a general-purpose countdown graphic.

Know what a timer can—and cannot—do
A graphic in OBS is part of the creator’s outgoing video. It can tell viewers how much time remains, but displaying zero does not itself stop the YouTube broadcast, pause playback, or control viewers’ devices. If the broadcast should end at a particular time, the creator still needs a separate stream-ending workflow.
YouTube Sleep Timer is for the viewer
YouTube Help’s Android instructions describe a viewer opening a video, tapping Settings, choosing Sleep timer, and selecting a duration. The viewer can adjust the timer and reset it after pausing. This is a playback control on the viewer’s device, not a graphic the creator adds to the livestream. Steps may differ on desktop or iOS. See YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer – Android.

Take a Break is a separate creator feature
YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break feature provides a temporary away screen that can be set up as a Browser Source in an encoder. YouTube says the break does not end automatically when its countdown reaches zero; the creator must end it in Live Control Room. Use it for an actual break, not as a substitute for a custom sleep timer over an ambience scene. Details are in YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the ambience stream needs to stay live after you turn off your computer, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
- Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
