Put the countdown in the program feed that OBS sends to YouTube. The most dependable simple setup is to make a countdown video and add it as its own item between your documentary videos in OBS’s VLC Video playlist—for example: documentary → countdown → documentary → countdown. Turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. YouTube’s viewer-side loop control does not add interstitials to a live encoder feed.
How a countdown gets into YouTube Live
For a live broadcast, an encoder sends the audio and video program to YouTube; YouTube makes that incoming feed available as a broadcast. So the countdown needs to be part of the program before it reaches YouTube. A playlist loop button that repeats a video for someone watching YouTube is a separate viewer playback feature, not a way to insert a countdown into your live stream. YouTube’s documentation describes the stream and broadcast as distinct concepts: YouTube Live Streaming API overview and YouTube’s instructions for looping videos or playlists.
The cited YouTube Live documentation does not describe a native Live Control Room setting that inserts a countdown between prerecorded items in an encoder feed. Build the interstitial into the feed in OBS, or arrange a separate OBS scene transition and automation.
Recommended method: put a countdown clip in the OBS playlist
A rendered countdown behaves like another media file in the sequence. This makes the order visible and easy to rehearse, without relying on an undocumented automatic trigger at each clip boundary.

1. Prepare the sequence
Choose the documentary video order and countdown duration. Create or obtain a countdown video supported by your playback setup, then place one between each pair of program videos where you want an interstitial. For example:
- Documentary A
- Countdown
- Documentary B
- Countdown
- Documentary C
Include a countdown after the final program video as well if you want one before the sequence restarts at Documentary A. Decide whether the countdown should be silent, have its own audio, or continue audio from another source; verify the result in your actual scene rather than assuming how overlapping media behaves.

2. Add the files to OBS
- In the OBS scene that will supply your YouTube program, add a VLC Video source.
- Add the local video and countdown files in the intended sequence. OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist source. If the source is not available, install VLC; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the whole list should start over after its last item.
See OBS’s Media Sources guide for its documented playlist and source controls. Loop Playlist restarts the source when it runs out of media; that setting alone is not documented as triggering a separate countdown scene after every item.
3. Connect OBS to the YouTube event
Select or create the live event in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then configure OBS as the encoder with the stream details provided for that event. YouTube treats event information and the incoming audio-video stream as separate parts of the live setup; the playlist and countdown belong in OBS’s outgoing program.

4. Rehearse the full loop
Preview every video-to-countdown transition and the final countdown-to-first-video boundary before relying on the sequence. Check that the countdown is legible, its duration is right, the next video starts as expected, and audio does not cut out or carry through unintentionally. Look for blank or frozen frames at handoffs. These behaviors depend on the files and scene configuration, so confirm them in your own setup.
Alternative: switch to a separate countdown scene
A separate OBS scene can give you more compositional flexibility: for example, it can combine a timer, background, text, or other sources. But putting a timer source above a video controls visual layering; it does not, by itself, define when the timer starts at each VLC playlist-item boundary.

Arrange the scene transition or automation separately, then rehearse it at every point where a countdown should appear. OBS’s documented Media Sources controls describe playlist and source behavior, but do not specify an automatic playlist-item-to-countdown-scene trigger. If you need a repeatable, low-complexity sequence, a countdown clip inserted directly into the playlist makes the order explicit. If you need a changing timer design or selective interstitials, a separate scene can be more flexible but requires separately arranged transitions.

Rights still apply to every item
Adding an interstitial does not grant permission to rebroadcast the documentaries, music, or countdown artwork in your stream. Use material you have the necessary rights to use, including any music or artwork inside the countdown clip.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos looping without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For a custom countdown, include it in the uploaded sequence as a video item; StreamNeo does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
- Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can YouTube add a countdown between items in a live playlist automatically?
The cited YouTube Live documentation does not describe a native setting for inserting a countdown between prerecorded items in an encoder feed. Put the countdown in the feed before it reaches YouTube.
Does OBS’s Loop Playlist setting trigger a countdown scene after every video?
No. It is documented as restarting a playlist source after it runs out of media, not as an automatic per-item scene trigger.
