How to Add a Clock and Weather Overlay to a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream

Use a transparent webpage and OBS Browser Source to layer a location-aware clock and model-based weather over a YouTube lofi scene.

Build a transparent webpage that displays the clock and weather, then add it to your lofi scene in OBS Studio as a Browser Source. The page supplies the clock and weather behavior; OBS displays it over your artwork. You can load a local HTML file or a hosted page, and you do not need a separate physical clock or weather display.

What you need

  • OBS Studio running the scene and YouTube stream. OBS Browser Source is supported in official packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • A small webpage that renders a clock and requests weather for a chosen location. You can make the page yourself or use an overlay provider; OBS is the renderer, not the source of the weather data.
  • A location, timezone, and temperature unit chosen deliberately. Open-Meteo supports latitude and longitude, a timezone parameter, and current-weather fields. Its timezone defaults to GMT, so set one explicitly or use auto to resolve it from the coordinates. Open-Meteo API documentation

OBS describes Browser Source as “one of the most versatile sources available in OBS.” Its page can be local or hosted; a local file avoids reliance on a third-party overlay host but must be updated on the streaming computer, while a hosted page is easier to change remotely but depends on the host and network.

Build or choose the clock-and-weather page

Choose the place and time display

Decide which city the overlay represents, and show its name on screen. Use coordinates for the weather request and select the matching timezone and units. The clock should show the intended local time for that place rather than silently inheriting a computer or API default.

Display useful weather, with an honest label

Keep the weather compact: temperature and condition are often enough; wind is optional. Open-Meteo lists current-weather fields including temperature, apparent temperature, weather code, precipitation, cloud cover, and wind. Its current conditions are based on 15-minute weather-model data, not necessarily an instantaneous reading from a nearby station. Label it as current/model-based weather rather than implying a live local sensor measurement.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Weather comes from a remote request, so plan for failure. If the request does not return usable data, hide the weather value or show when it was last updated rather than leaving a misleading stale number on screen. This fallback is implementation guidance, not a recovery feature guaranteed by OBS or Open-Meteo. If the use is commercial, review Open-Meteo’s current access and licensing terms: its API reference says a key is required for commercial use of reserved API resources, which does not mean every commercial use necessarily needs a key or that all use is free.

Add the overlay in OBS Studio

  1. Prepare the page. Save the finished overlay as a local HTML file or publish it at a URL. Make the page background transparent so the lofi scene remains visible.
  2. Add a Browser Source. In OBS, select the scene, then in the Sources panel choose the option to add a Browser Source. Choose Local file for the HTML file, or enter the hosted page URL.
  3. Set the viewport. Enter a width and height that match the overlay page’s intended dimensions. OBS Browser Source offers configurable dimensions as well as local-file and URL modes.
  4. Place it in the scene. Position and scale the source so it does not cover important artwork or compete with the music visual. Preview it at a small size; viewers may be watching on phones.
  5. Verify the display. Confirm the city label, timezone, units, clock, and weather are correct. Check what appears when the weather request fails or the page has not yet loaded.

OBS Browser Source’s documented default CSS makes its background transparent, removes page margins, and hides overflow. A page can still include its own background or layout, so check the actual preview instead of assuming the design is transparent.

Keep the page available during a long stream

Leave the Browser Source visible in the active scene. OBS includes options for unloading a source when it is hidden and refreshing it when the scene becomes active; check those settings if the overlay disappears after switching scenes. The documentation establishes that these controls exist, but not an automatic recovery system for a failed page or a guarantee of long-run reliability.

A local page avoids depending on an overlay host, but changes need to be made on the streaming machine. A hosted page is convenient to update remotely, but depends on network access and hosting availability. Faster weather polling may make the value appear fresher, but it cannot turn 15-minute model-based conditions into a live sensor feed.

Check the YouTube broadcast separately

The overlay is only one part of the production. YouTube distinguishes the liveStream, which carries incoming audio and video, from the liveBroadcast, the viewer-facing video. Google’s guide includes a 24/7-feed use case, and its API treats a broadcast without a scheduled end time as continuing indefinitely. That describes API behavior, not a promise that a stream will stay uninterrupted. Check the current channel eligibility and controls in YouTube Studio; the exact UI path can vary with account and current interface.

A stream can be bound to as many as three broadcasts, according to Google’s guide. Archive, DVR, auto-start, auto-stop, and latency are separate broadcast choices. The API documentation says DVR defaults to enabled for a new broadcast; to make archived playback available immediately after the broadcast, both archive and DVR must be enabled. Decide whether you need replay and interactivity before setting these options. Ending a long-running broadcast affects its archive and may mean creating a new broadcast resource or arranging a restart.

Ultra-low latency has trade-offs: YouTube’s API reference says it does not support closed captions or resolutions above 1080p. Choose latency based on whether low delay matters more than those limitations. Use YouTube Studio or your encoder workflow to monitor stream health and broadcast state; do not treat an indefinitely configured broadcast as an uptime guarantee.

Common problems and fixes

  • The overlay has a solid box behind it: inspect the webpage’s CSS for an opaque background and preview the Browser Source. OBS’s default CSS is transparent, but page styling can override that.
  • The time is wrong: explicitly set the page’s clock timezone and compare it with the named city. Do not assume the weather API timezone controls a separately implemented clock.
  • Weather is blank or stale: check the location coordinates, network access, API response, and page fallback. Show a last-updated time or suppress the value when it cannot be refreshed.
  • The page is cropped or unexpectedly scaled: adjust the Browser Source width and height to the page’s intended viewport, then reposition or scale it in the scene.
  • The overlay vanishes after a scene change: check whether the source is unloaded when hidden and whether it refreshes when the scene becomes active. These controls can help with source behavior but do not guarantee recovery from all page failures.
  • The broadcast ends or the replay is unavailable: inspect broadcast state and archive/DVR choices separately from the overlay. A continuous-looking scene does not itself configure YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube lofi stream that keeps playing uploaded videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams to YouTube only and does not add a camera feed. An overlay is still a separate design choice; the StreamNeo facts here do not establish a built-in clock or weather overlay.
