To add a chatbot to YouTube Live, make your stream public and live, then connect a bot such as StreamElements or Nightbot. StreamElements is added as a moderator in YouTube Studio; Nightbot is connected from its dashboard using the Join control. Once the bot is in chat, configure commands, recurring messages, and spam filters to suit your stream.
Before you connect a chatbot
- Set the YouTube stream to Public and start the live broadcast. Both StreamElements and Nightbot require a public stream that is currently live before they can join.
- Sign in to the bot service with the account you intend to use for it, and keep access to YouTube Studio available.
A bot can automate chat responses and routine moderation, but it does not replace YouTube’s own live-chat controls or human oversight.
Add StreamElements to YouTube Live
- Set your stream’s visibility to Public and go live. StreamElements cannot join a private or unlisted stream.
- Open YouTube Studio > Settings > Community.
- Under the moderator controls, add one of the StreamElements channel identifiers given in its setup guide: https://youtube.com/c/streamelements or https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjerlCIbLPQwSnYlClkjDXg.
- Open the stream’s chat and select Live chat, not Top chat. StreamElements warns that Top chat may hide the bot’s messages.
- If the bot does not appear, check that the stream is public and live, that you added the correct StreamElements channel, and that the stream appears live in the StreamElements dashboard.
StreamElements’ YouTube setup guide also says the bot name cannot be changed on YouTube. It lists YouTube account limitations for loyalty-system features: giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests are not currently available. Feature availability can change, so check the provider’s current documentation before relying on one of these features.
Add Nightbot to YouTube Live
- Visit Nightbot and sign in with the account you want to use. This opens the Control Panel.
- Click Join at the top right of the dashboard and follow the moderator instructions Nightbot displays.
- Make your YouTube stream public and start the broadcast. Nightbot says it will join a YouTube channel only while the stream is public and live, citing YouTube API rate limits.
- After Nightbot joins, use the Control Panel to set up commands, timers, and spam filters.

Commands
With StreamElements, use its command dashboard to create a custom command, enter its name and response, and activate it. Optional controls include aliases, cooldowns, loyalty-point costs, and conditions such as running only while the stream is live. You can restrict commands by user level—for example, limiting a moderator action to moderators.

Nightbot also provides command settings in its Control Panel. Choose command names and responses that are easy for viewers to remember, and limit access where a command should not be available to everyone.
Recurring messages
Both services support timers. In StreamElements, configure the recurring message and its online interval in minutes. Nightbot’s timer controls include an interval and a chat-line threshold. Consider both settings: a timer can be configured to wait for a given interval and, in Nightbot’s case, the required volume of chat activity before posting.

Spam filters
StreamElements documents filters and banned words. Nightbot documents filters for capitalization, links, symbols, and a custom blacklist. Start with the controls that address the behavior you actually see; overly broad filters can catch legitimate viewer messages.
StreamElements or Nightbot?
Both services document YouTube support, commands, and timers. The main difference in the documented setup is how you connect them and which dashboard controls you prefer.

Choose based on the connection flow and controls you need, then verify current feature availability in each provider’s documentation. The setup information cited here does not establish that one bot is universally better for every channel.
Use YouTube’s built-in moderation too
YouTube Live includes controls that work alongside a chatbot. In YouTube’s live-chat settings, you can add or manage moderators, block words, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review using Basic or Strict moderation, and enable slow mode.
