The closing track of The Weeknd’s 2025 album Hurry Up Tomorrow circles back to the eerie ambient sound that opens his 2011 debut mixtape, House of Balloons. Published reporting describes the album’s ending flowing into “High for This,” the mixtape’s opening track. That makes the connection a musical bookend—not proof that “High for This” was the first song Abel Tesfaye ever wrote or recorded.
What is the connection between the album’s ending and “High for This”?
Hurry Up Tomorrow closes with its title track. The Guardian described the song’s final moments as returning to “the same eerie ambient tone that opens his first mixtape, House of Balloons,” and framed the echo as a gesture of circularity and finality. The Guardian’s May 16, 2025 interview presents the sound as a callback to the beginning of Tesfaye’s recorded mixtape-era catalog.

A May 16, 2025 Billboard News feature republished by Radio 88.8 makes the link more specific: it reports that the ending of “Hurry Up Tomorrow” seamlessly transitions into the beginning of “High for This,” the first track on House of Balloons. The feature discusses the wider context with sound designer Johnnie Burn and notes that fans had pointed out the transition. Treat “seamlessly transitions” as the feature’s description of the audio, rather than an official track-list annotation.
Why “first song ever” needs a qualification
“High for This” is the first track on House of Balloons, which Complex identifies as The Weeknd’s debut mixtape. It was released March 21, 2011, according to Complex’s 2013 interview. Those facts support calling it the opening track of his debut mixtape; they do not establish that it was the first song Tesfaye ever made, wrote, or recorded.
#1 Best Overall
- Hurry Up Tomorrow (Complete Edition) features 22 tracks on 2 LPs
The distinction matters because the callback is about how the album and the mixtape are sequenced and sound—not a claim about the chronology of every song he created before his debut.
Where Hurry Up Tomorrow fits in The Weeknd’s albums
Released January 31, 2025, through XO and Republic Records, Hurry Up Tomorrow is presented as the final chapter in a trilogy that began with After Hours (2020) and continued with Dawn FM (2022). Universal Music Canada’s release announcement describes it as the trilogy’s concluding chapter. Apple Music lists 22 tracks and a total running time of 1 hour and 24 minutes on its album page.
Rank #2
- Hurry Up Tomorrow is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd, released through XO and Republic Records
The Associated Press also connected the album’s inspiration in part to a 2022 SoFi Stadium performance where Tesfaye lost his voice. That background adds context to an album presented around fame and mortality, but the specific link between its last track and “High for This” is the musical bookend described by the Guardian and Billboard News feature. The Associated Press report covers the album’s release and context.
How to hear the bookend
- Play the final track, “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” from the album.
- Then play the beginning of House of Balloons, starting with “High for This.”
- Listen for the return of the eerie ambient tone and, as reported by Billboard News, the transition between the two recordings.
Exact playback behavior can vary with the digital master or gap settings, so the reported transition should not be taken to mean every platform or release version will play the tracks as one uninterrupted file.
Rank #3
- Composed and arranged by Abel Tesfaye & Daniel Lopatin
What The Weeknd has said about the callback
The available coverage describes the sound comparison, but does not establish a direct statement from Tesfaye explaining the final-track-to-first-track connection. In the Billboard News feature, he says of using earlier songs in the film: “But to tap into that, you need to go into the back catalog a little bit, and take in what I’m saying in some of these lyrics and how they’re masked by pop elements.” That comment concerns the film’s use of his back catalog; it should not be treated as his explanation of the album’s ending.
