Neither novel should be read as a court record: Rushdie transforms the events through comic magical realism, and Sinha has said that the rest of his story is fiction.
What happened in the Nanavati case?
In 1959, Indian naval commander K. M. Nanavati was tried for killing Prem Ahuja. The case turned in part on whether the killing was premeditated or followed provocation. A jury initially found Nanavati not guilty, but that verdict was set aside and the case went through further court review. A secondary overview of the proceedings is available in the case summary for K. M. Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra.
The case’s public life extended beyond the courtroom. Scholar Sabeena Gadihoke describes it as a media event shaped by tabloid photography, public fantasy and melodramatic retellings. That afterlife helps explain why the episode could serve novelists as material for fiction, not merely as a sequence of legal events.
How does the case appear in Midnight’s Children?
Rushdie’s chapter “Commander Sabarmati’s Baton” creates a fictional parallel to the Nanavati story. Commander Sabarmati echoes Nanavati, Lila Sabarmati echoes Sylvia, and Homi Catrack echoes Prem Ahuja. In the novel, Saleem helps set events in motion with an anonymous note; the invented confrontation and its aftermath take a comic, magical-realist turn. These are elements of Rushdie’s fiction, not claims about what happened in court.

Literary coverage by Anvar Alikhan in Scroll describes the episode as an oblique reference within Rushdie’s much larger novel. Its brief, transformed treatment differs from a book built around the case itself.
How does The Death of Mr Love use the case?
Sinha draws more directly on the case but shifts attention away from the Nanavati couple toward other characters and consequences. The novel’s title refers to Prem Ahuja: prem means “love.” Gadihoke notes that this shift redirects the story’s focus toward the man cast as the victim in the familiar account.

Alikhan reports that Sinha researched the case in the archives of Blitz, the publication whose coverage interested him. In a 2007 interview with Hindustan Times, Sinha said: “I got interested by the way Blitz treated the case. Prem Ahuja who appeared to be the victim became the villain.” He added a clear distinction between inspiration and historical record: “But the rest of the story is pure fiction.” The interview, “Writers are like scavengers,” is available at Hindustan Times.
How the novels differ
| Novel | How it uses the case | What it foregrounds | Fictional transformation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie | A fictionalized episode within a larger novel | The Sabarmati-Catrack triangle, reframed through Saleem’s role | Invented characters and comic magical-realist aftermath |
| The Death of Mr Love by Indra Sinha | A central factual starting point for a broader narrative | Other characters and the case’s consequences, including a shift toward Prem Ahuja | A researched point of departure followed by a story Sinha calls pure fiction |
Why the case stayed in cultural memory
The literary link is part of a wider afterlife in which publicity and retelling helped turn a criminal case into cultural material. Gadihoke’s study connects the episode’s media spectacle with Rushdie’s oblique reference and Sinha’s 2002 novel. The two books use that inheritance differently: one folds a transformed parallel into a sprawling fictional world; the other builds a broader narrative from the case and its surrounding perspectives.

A reported school connection
Alikhan also reports that Rushdie and Sinha attended Mumbai’s Cathedral School with Nanavati’s son, Pheroze, and recalls the case as vivid in their school years. This is Alikhan’s account of the connection; it should not be treated as an independently confirmed statement by either novelist.
