The Hindu-Arabic numeral system did not emerge all at once. Its history joins three developments: Indian numeral forms descended from Brahmi, decimal place-value notation, and zero’s use both as a placeholder and in arithmetic. Arabic-language scholars transmitted and adapted the system, Europe adopted it gradually, and the shapes familiar today took centuries to settle.
What makes the Hindu-Arabic system different?
The ten symbols 0 through 9 are only the visible part of the system. Its defining feature is positional decimal notation: a digit’s value depends on where it appears in a number. In 507, for example, 5 stands for five hundreds, 0 marks the tens position as empty, and 7 stands for seven ones. The same digit can therefore express different quantities in different positions.
This is distinct from a collection of separate symbols for ones, tens, hundreds, and other values. A system can use decimal groupings without using place value, and it can have numeral symbols without having a zero placeholder. The modern system is the result of these ideas coming together, not simply a new set of handwritten shapes.
The name “Hindu-Arabic” reflects the history of transmission: the decimal place-value tradition developed in India, and Arabic-language scholars helped explain and carry it onward. The label does not mean that the familiar European-looking forms were invented in Arabia, nor that the system appeared in its complete modern form at a single moment. MacTutor describes the Indian decimal place-value system as the ancestor of the modern one, while noting that Indians were not the first people to develop any kind of place-value notation (MacTutor History of Mathematics).

What came before the modern digits?
Brahmi numerals supplied important ancestors
Numeral forms identified as Brahmi are attested in India from around the middle of the third century BCE. They are ancestors of the later forms, but Brahmi notation was not the modern positional system. It used distinct symbols for a range of values, including tens and hundreds. A written value was not constructed in the same way as a modern number whose digits take their meaning from position.
This distinction matters when asking where “the digits” came from. There is a history of the written symbols, and a separate history of the rules that make those symbols work together as positional decimal notation. Brahmi is central to the first history; it should not be treated as an already-complete version of the second.
The ancestry of individual shapes is not fully settled
Historians trace the later numeral forms to Brahmi, but the shape-by-shape descent is not equally clear for every digit. MacTutor specifically notes that the ancestry of the forms for 4 through 9 is debated. It is safer to describe Brahmi as an ancestor of the numeral tradition than to claim a certain, uninterrupted sequence of changes for each modern glyph.
Nor did the symbols remain visually fixed as the underlying notation spread. Different regions used different forms, and forms changed over time. Al-Biruni, writing about Indian numerals in a book from about 1030, observed: “And just as the shape of the letters that they use for writing is different in different regions of their country, so the numerical symbols vary.” The quotation is preserved in MacTutor’s account. It captures a useful distinction: people could share a way of writing numbers without drawing every digit identically.

How place value changed the way numbers could be written
In positional decimal notation, each position represents a power of ten: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. The value of a written number comes from combining the digit values with their positions. Thus 507 means 5 × 100, plus 0 × 10, plus 7 × 1. The notation avoids requiring a unique symbol for every larger quantity.
Zero makes this compact system work when a place has no units. Without the 0 in 507, the written 57 would ordinarily indicate five tens and seven ones, not five hundreds and seven ones. The placeholder preserves the position of the 5 even though there are no tens. In 57, by contrast, no zero is needed because both the tens and ones positions contain a nonzero digit.
This example explains the logic of the mature notation; it is not a claim that a particular early artifact used those exact written forms. The historical development of place value and the evidence for zero have to be considered on their own terms. MacTutor’s account supports the broad distinction between non-positional Brahmi numerals and the Indian decimal place-value system, but the surviving record does not turn that change into a single dated invention.
Why zero has more than one historical milestone
“When was zero invented?” can refer to different things: a mark used as a placeholder, a written numeral in a surviving inscription, or a mathematical treatment of zero in arithmetic. These are related but not interchangeable kinds of evidence. A date for one does not automatically establish the date for the others.

Zero in arithmetic
In the seventh century CE, the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta gave zero a distinct treatment in arithmetic. This is an important mathematical milestone: zero was discussed as an object of calculation, not merely as an empty position to be marked in writing. Smith and Karpinski’s historical account reproduces this context in its discussion of zero (The Hindu-Arabic Numerals, 1911).
The distinction is useful because a placeholder and a number answer different needs. A placeholder makes the arrangement of digits legible; arithmetic rules describe how zero participates in operations. The existence of a written mark alone does not show when a systematic arithmetic treatment was formulated.
The Sambor inscription, dated 683 CE
Debra Gross Aczel’s 2015 account describes an inscription at Sambor in Cambodia as recording Śaka year 605, equivalent to 683 CE. She says it contains a zero represented by a wide dot and identifies it as the first known zero within the tradition that evolved into the modern numerals. This is a claim about a particular artifact and the interpretation of its mark, as presented in her account—not a universal agreement that one date settles every question about zero (Aczel, TIME, 2015).
The Gwalior inscription, dated 876 CE
Smith and Karpinski’s 1911 book calls the Gwalior inscription of 876 CE the earliest undoubted occurrence of zero in India known to them. Their account also records uncertainty around older reported claims. That description differs from Aczel’s discussion of the Cambodian inscription: one is an older historical account’s statement about an Indian inscription, while the other identifies a Cambodian artifact dated earlier. The two claims should be reported with their sources and contexts rather than flattened into a single uncontested “first.”

These examples show why evidence about early zero is often discussed with qualifications. The question is not only which dated object has the oldest mark interpreted as zero, but also what the mark represents, where it sits in the developing numeral tradition, and what kind of milestone the evidence can establish.

Arabic-language scholars transmitted and adapted the tradition
Historical accounts describe Indian numerals reaching Arabic-language scholars, who explained and adapted the system. In the ninth century, al-Khwarizmi’s work on Indian numerals was an important channel for their spread through the Islamic world and later into Europe, according to EBSCO’s overview (EBSCO Research Starters, “Arabic Numerals”).
This transmission history helps explain the “Arabic” part of the name. It refers to the scholarly route by which the system became known beyond India, not to a claim that its underlying decimal place-value tradition originated in Europe. As ideas crossed linguistic and regional boundaries, explanation and adaptation were part of the story, not merely the physical copying of a fixed row of ten symbols.
European adoption was gradual
EBSCO identifies the Codex Vigilanus, written in Spain and dated 976 CE, as the oldest definitely dated European manuscript in its account to contain the Hindu-Arabic numerals. That manuscript is evidence of their presence in a European context by that date; it does not mean that the system was immediately or uniformly adopted across Europe.

The later history of the written forms reinforces the gradual nature of adoption. MacTutor says forms close to those now used in Europe appeared by the fifteenth century, and that printing helped standardize them. The principles of decimal place value therefore have a longer history than the familiar, relatively settled appearance of the glyphs in printed European texts.
How the system’s rules and its written forms changed on different timelines
| Historical thread | What changed | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Numeral ancestry | Later digit forms developed from earlier numeral traditions. | Brahmi numerals are attested in India around the middle of the third century BCE; the ancestry of forms 4–9 remains debated, according to MacTutor. |
| Notation principle | Separate symbols for many values gave way, in the later tradition, to decimal place value. | Brahmi numerals were non-positional; the Indian decimal place-value system is described as the ancestor of the modern one by MacTutor. |
| Zero | A placeholder and an object of arithmetic became distinct parts of the story. | Brahmagupta treated zero in arithmetic in the seventh century; dated inscription claims include Sambor in 683 CE as described by Aczel and Gwalior in 876 CE in Smith and Karpinski’s account. |
| Transmission | The system moved through scholarly networks beyond India. | EBSCO connects al-Khwarizmi’s ninth-century work with transmission through the Islamic world and identifies the Codex Vigilanus of 976 CE as a dated European manuscript milestone. |
| Glyph appearance | Regional forms changed and eventually became more standardized in Europe. | MacTutor says forms close to current European forms appeared by the fifteenth century and printing helped standardize them. |
The rows are related, but they do not describe one simultaneous event. The system’s notation rules, zero’s mathematical role, the spread of the method, and the shapes of individual digits each have their own evidence and chronology.
What “from 0 to 9” does—and does not—mean
The phrase “from 0 to 9” names the ten basic symbols used in decimal notation; it should not be read as a literal sequence in which the modern zero appeared first and the other nine digits followed one by one. The evidence instead points to overlapping histories: ancestral forms, changing methods of notation, the development of zero’s roles, and transmission between scholarly communities.
Likewise, “Arabic numerals” and “Hindu-Arabic numerals” are historical labels for a system whose development involved more than one region. Calling the system Hindu-Arabic helps acknowledge both the Indian mathematical tradition and Arabic-language transmission. Calling a particular shape “the modern 4” or “the modern 9” can obscure how much regional variation persisted before forms became familiar in European printing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most accurate short answer is therefore not that one person invented all ten digits. Brahmi numeral forms supplied ancestors; Indian mathematicians developed the decimal place-value tradition and a mathematical treatment of zero; Arabic-language scholarship helped transmit and adapt it; Europe adopted it gradually; and printing contributed to the eventual standardization of familiar glyphs. Each part matters, and none alone explains the system readers use today.
