The Duffer Brothers began Stranger Things as a movie homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, then realized the story worked better as television. They shaped its tone with a montage of film clips and music, drew on their childhood and Dungeons & Dragons, and kept developing the characters and world through casting and production design.
How did the idea become a Netflix series?
In 2014, Matt and Ross Duffer were writers and directors trying to get movie ideas made. Their first version of the project was conceived as a movie that paid homage to filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Seeing the trailer for True Detective helped persuade them that television could give the story room to unfold.
They wrote a pilot and circulated it under the title Montauk. Producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment backed the project as executive producers, and Netflix ordered the supernatural drama in April 2015. The early title was Montauk; Stranger Things is the series Netflix ordered and released. The film influences were a creative starting point, not a blueprint for copying any one movie.
How did they explain the show’s tone?
Rather than relying only on a written synopsis or storyboard, the Duffers assembled a trailer from clips of roughly 30 films. Matt Duffer said the montage mixed movies from the 1980s with some from other decades. Pairing images from E.T. with John Carpenter-style synth music helped the brothers settle on the atmosphere and show producers what they had in mind. NPR’s interview with the Duffers describes how the trailer communicated the project.

- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
Ross Duffer explained that the references felt connected because Spielberg, Carpenter, and King often focused on small towns and ordinary people facing extraordinary events. The point was to establish a shared mood, not to claim that the show had just one source of inspiration.
The visual pitch also reached prospective cast members. The brothers sent Winona Ryder a document with images from E.T., Jaws, and Carpenter films, along with a fake trailer and the pilot script. In both cases, the references offered a quick way to convey the show’s aesthetic.

Why is Dungeons & Dragons central to the story?
The first scene the brothers wrote was the children playing Dungeons & Dragons. Ross Duffer said the scene felt close to their own childhood experience growing up in North Carolina. The real setting of their youth was not the show’s cinematic basement, but the game itself gave them a familiar starting point.
Within the series, D&D gives the children a language for making sense of dangers they cannot yet explain. They compare monsters and strange events with creatures and challenges from the game. Matt Duffer has described Stranger Things as resembling a large D&D campaign: the role-playing framework gives the characters a way to interpret what is happening and helps organize the story’s challenges. The brothers continued drawing on the game as the series and its mythology grew.

How did casting change the characters?
The pilot’s characters were starting sketches, not finished blueprints. Ross Duffer said the roles continued to evolve after the actors were cast. The Television Academy’s retrospective reports that casting director Carmen Cuba suggested Winona Ryder; the Duffers and Levy met with her before she joined the show.
Matt Duffer said Joyce became more interesting once Ryder was cast. Imagining the actor in different situations helped the brothers build the character around her strengths, including the Christmas-lights sequence through which Joyce communicates with Will. The example shows how casting affected the writing rather than simply filling roles already complete on the page. The Television Academy’s account of the series’ development and the Duffers’ discussion of Ryder and Joyce cover that process.

How did the production create Hawkins and the Upside Down?
The show’s 1980s setting was built from specific, lived-in details rather than broad period shorthand. Production designer Chris Trujillo said the team sourced furniture, décor, and props from suburban estate sales to make rooms feel authentic and inhabited.
For the Upside Down, the production generally transformed the same physical sets used for the real-world version of a location. Practical materials including foam, plastic, and pussy willow fluff were applied to existing designs, making familiar spaces look diseased and uncanny. The contrast between the two versions rests on one recognizable place presented in radically different condition. Netflix’s production-design feature explains the approach and materials.

- A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, STRANGER THINGS is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The pitch trailer and the production design had different jobs: the montage conveyed the intended feeling through film images and music; the design team made places the actors and camera could inhabit.
How did the original ideas develop over later seasons?
The scale and tone changed as the story expanded. In a 2022 interview, Matt Duffer described Season 4 as moving among Hawkins, California, and Russia, with each location given a distinct feel. Ross Duffer said the darker season followed Season 3’s brighter, more pop-oriented tone and reflected the accumulated mythology and the story’s move toward an endgame.
Some ideas from the early pitch had to wait for room to develop. Ross Duffer recalled that it included children moving through multiple portals, or gates, between dimensions—an idea the first season did not have room to explore. The concept became more usable as the series’ world widened. The Duffers’ Season 4 interview discusses the change in scope and the early idea.
