Carter Vail’s “Dirt Man” caught on as a participatory TikTok comedy song: a strange, catchy premise that invited people to add their own verses and imagine what the Dirt Man might be. The original idea is simple—leave dirt under your pillow or risk being taken to an underground mountain lair. The increasingly elaborate lore came largely from fans.
Who made “Dirt Man,” and what is the song about?
Musician Carter Vail posted “Dirt Man” to TikTok in late April 2024. The exact first-post date varies in contemporaneous coverage: Know Your Meme gives April 26, while the Daily Dot gives April 27. The Daily Dot describes the song’s central bargain: men leave dirt beneath their pillows so the Dirt Man will not take them away to his underground mountain lair. (Know Your Meme; The Daily Dot)
Vail told the Boston Globe that the song’s idea arrived unexpectedly: “It just popped into my head when I woke up.” (The Boston Globe, July 8, 2024)
Why did the song spread on TikTok?
A premise people could immediately reuse
The song gives listeners a memorable character, a rule (leave dirt under the pillow), and a consequence (the Dirt Man may take you). It leaves many other details open. That makes the idea easy to perform, parody, illustrate, or extend without needing to settle on one definitive version of the character.

Covers and an open verse turned listening into participation
Users began posting covers and other videos around the original sound. Vail then posted an open-verse challenge, giving people a direct invitation to write and perform additional lyrics. Know Your Meme documents a choral version, a talk-box cover, and an animation, as well as Vail’s June 2 open-verse post. (Know Your Meme)
Vail told Gizmodo that he enjoyed the open-verse response and the stories fans came up with, including a fan-made Dungeons & Dragons character sheet. His account of noticing the early response was: “I guess that’s like three days after I posted it.” (Gizmodo, June 7, 2024)

How much did “Dirt Man” spread?
Published figures are historical snapshots, not current totals. They also measure different things, so they should not be treated as one continuous view count.
| Report | What it said |
|---|---|
| Know Your Meme, updated June 6, 2024 | Its entry said the original clip had more than 13.6 million views and 1.4 million likes in about a month and a half. (Know Your Meme) |
| The Daily Dot, June 4, 2024 | Reported 11.8 million views and appearances in 1,289 videos at publication. (The Daily Dot) |
| Vail’s estimate to Gizmodo, June 7, 2024 | “Yeah, I think it’s at almost 14 million on TikTok.” (Gizmodo) |
| The Boston Globe, July 8, 2024 | Reported more than 20 million views across social-media platforms since April. (The Boston Globe) |
The late-April upload-date discrepancy and the June TikTok figures come from separate publications and reporting moments. The July figure covers multiple social platforms, not TikTok alone.

What is the Dirt Man lore, and how much of it is official?
The original song supplies only a few pieces: the Dirt Man, dirt under a pillow, the threat of being taken, and an underground mountain lair. Fans filled the gaps with new verses, character depictions, jokes, and other creative responses. That body of fan work is an expanding set of interpretations around a comedy song, not a formally established mythology.
Vail has said he does not want to explain the character further. In a 2024 interview with Groovevolt, he said: “People keep asking about an extended version, but I think part of the charm is that there is no follow up information.” That is Vail’s view of the appeal, not a single official answer to every question fans have raised. Did the viral song make money, or lead to merchandise?
Vail told Gizmodo that the funny videos had not brought him much direct money at the time. He described social media as a way to create future possibilities rather than a straightforward revenue operation: “It’s more of a tool than an actual, like, money-making operation.” The interview does not establish his later earnings or royalty totals. (Gizmodo, June 7, 2024)
The Boston Globe reported on July 8, 2024, that Vail’s merch website offered a $22 Dirt Man pillowcase and dirt baggie set; it was sold out, with preorders for a restock underway at that time. That report does not establish current availability or confirm a current Amazon listing. (The Boston Globe)
