The 2024 Cruel Intentions series turns Cecile Caldwell, Selma Blair’s naïve character in the 1999 film, into Cece Carroway, a more knowing and socially active student played by Sara Silva. That change gives the character more agency and narrative weight. Whether it makes her “better” is a matter of taste, but the series makes a persuasive case by giving Cecile’s counterpart more room to shape the story.
Is Cece Carroway based on Cecile Caldwell?
Yes. Cece Carroway is the series’ reimagining of Cecile Caldwell, not the same character carried forward into a sequel. Blair played Cecile in the 1999 movie; Silva plays Cece in the 2024 series. The show also reworks other familiar roles: Caroline Merteuil echoes Kathryn Merteuil, while Lucien Belmont and Annie Grover loosely correspond to figures from the film.

The series shifts the story to Manchester College, where fraternities and sororities shape status and influence. Its official premise follows Caroline and Lucien trying to protect their standing after a hazing incident threatens Greek life. That collegiate setting gives Cece a different social world from the one occupied by the film’s Cecile. Amazon’s series overview describes the setting and central conflict.
How did the series change Cecile?
From naïve to more self-aware
Coverage of the adaptation draws a clear contrast: film Cecile is naïve, while television Cece is more knowing. That does not mean Cece is wholly independent of Caroline, or that she controls every situation. It does mean the series presents her as more alert to the social dynamics around her and less defined by innocence. TV Insider’s discussion of the film nods identifies the character distinction.

A larger part in the story
Co-showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher have discussed expanding Cecile’s role for the series. That creator-backed choice matters: Cece is not simply a renamed callback. Giving her more narrative room lets the adaptation use a familiar character as an active part of its new power struggle. TheWrap’s interview with the showrunners covers their approach to expanding the role.
What happens to the movie’s familiar scenes?
The series keeps recognizable echoes of the original but does not reproduce every relationship beat with the same characters. One example is a notable kiss: the series places the homage between Caroline and Annie, rather than repeating the film’s Kathryn-and-Cecile pairing. The shift shows how the adaptation redistributes familiar material to fit its own characters and relationships. TVLine’s interview about the episode-four scene discusses that changed pairing.

Does the change make Cece better than Cecile?
As character construction, the change is an improvement: Cece has more agency, more awareness, and more room in the plot than the film’s deliberately naïve Cecile. The series makes her a participant in its social maneuvering rather than relying on the same contrast between innocence and manipulation.
But “better” depends on what a viewer wants from the character. Cecile’s naïveté is part of the original film’s design; someone who values that function, or Blair’s performance of it, may prefer the movie’s version. The series’ achievement is not proving that one portrayal is objectively superior. It is making Cecile’s counterpart feel like a fuller fit for a new story.

Where the series stands
The eight-episode series premiered on Prime Video in November 2024. Prime Video did not renew it for a second season, according to TheWrap’s March 10, 2025 report. Its one-season run leaves Cece’s expanded role within the adaptation’s existing story rather than a continuing series arc.
