Fight coordinators shaped sequences around the script and what each performer could safely do, so screen-ready choreography should not be mistaken for proof that every actor had extensive martial-arts experience or performed every move.
How did the training process work?
Accounts from the early seasons describe preparation that began before filming and continued into production. In a 2019 interview, stunt coordinators Hiro Koda and Jahnel Curfman said performers did pre-training, then arrived about two and a half weeks before filming to begin working through new choreography. They also described a studio gym where cast members learned choreography while continuing martial-arts training. That timing describes the production period they discussed, not a fixed schedule for every season or performer.
The work had several distinct parts:
- Physical preparation: General conditioning and mobility work helped performers prepare for the physical demands of their roles.
- Martial-arts practice: Cast members trained in movement and techniques relevant to the production; the coordinators said some continued this practice while learning choreography.
- Choreography and rehearsal: Performers learned sequences designed to be repeatable on camera, rather than simply improvising a fight.
- Stunt support: Stunt-team members helped build and present demanding action, with doubles available where needed.
How were the fights designed?
The fight team started with the story. In a discussion of Season 4, coordinators described talking through the script, identifying the dramatic beats and then translating those beats into martial-arts movement. They tailored the choreography to what individual performers could do, rather than treating every actor as interchangeable.
Sean Kanan’s return as Mike Barnes provides a later, actor-specific example. In a 2022 interview with TIME, Kanan said he increased his training and stretching before filming, then spoke with stunt coordinator Don Lee and was assessed after arriving in Atlanta. The team built his choreography around his demonstrated range. Kanan explained the practical limit this way: “They can’t say, ‘Hey, listen, we want you to do a 360-degree flying-whatever kick,’ if that’s just out of my wheelhouse.”

For Kanan, rehearsal was also a safety measure: “That’s why it’s so important that the choreography is well-rehearsed, so nobody gets hurt.” His account illustrates how one performer’s movements were developed; it should not be read as a description of every cast member’s preparation.
Did every actor already know martial arts?
No single answer fits the entire cast. Koda and Curfman said in their 2019 interview that many of the younger performers had no martial-arts experience before the series and progressed as the seasons went on. Their comments describe the cast they were discussing at that time; they do not establish the background of every actor across all six seasons.

Other performers brought different starting points. Reporting on William Zabka has described earlier karate practice. Jacob Bertrand, who plays Hawk, discussed preparation that included boxing and Muay Thai, along with stretching and choreography. Those are separate accounts tied to particular performers and periods. Bertrand’s preparation for Hawk, in particular, should not be treated as a complete record of his everyday training or as a description of the whole cast.
What did stunt doubles contribute?
A stunt performer account describes doubles as one part of large fight productions: they can take on demanding action and help with movement and camera presentation. That explains why a polished fight may involve both an actor’s practiced choreography and specialist stunt support.

The available accounts do not identify who performed every move or which shots used a double. They therefore do not support claims that every actor performed all of their own stunts—or that a particular actor did or did not perform a specific on-screen action.

The interviews show a production process designed to make action convincing, repeatable and suited to each performer. They document varied backgrounds, role-specific preparation and choreography shaped by both the story and actors’ abilities. They do not provide a reliable cast-by-cast training ledger, a complete season-by-season schedule, or a basis for ranking the actors’ real-world martial-arts skills.
