Teddy Swims said “Lose Control” grew from a relationship he was struggling to leave: he felt himself sinking, stopped caring for himself and became codependent. At a February writing camp, an instrumental from producer Ammo and an invitation from Julian Bunetta to riff over it gave that private experience a song. Swims has described its meaning not only as dependency, but as healing and getting past a relationship that was no longer good for him.
How “Lose Control” began in the writing room
In an interview with Official Charts, Swims recalled a writing camp the previous February. Producer Ammo had started what Swims called the “first bones” of the instrumental. Julian Bunetta wanted Swims to riff or run over it, and the collaborators were aiming for their own take on the vocal challenge of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey.”

The session became personal when Swims connected the music to a relationship he was trying to leave. He described feeling as though he was “sinking down,” neglecting himself and becoming codependent. He wanted to get out but did not know how; in retrospect, he said leaving was best for both people.
What Swims says the song is about
Swims has framed the relationship as something that can feel like a substance: a person may be bad for you, yet love can keep you attached. As he put it to Official Charts, “You can love somebody so much that it’s not good for you anymore.”

In a statement shared by iHeartRadio, he also described the song as being about becoming codependent and then working through what comes after: “And so this, it’s a song that’s just about healing and getting past that.” That is Swims’s account of the song’s meaning; listeners may hear their own experiences in it, but the broader interpretation should not be mistaken for additional biographical details he has stated.
From a private story to a widely heard song
Swims said he was grateful that listeners connected with something so personal. “Lose Control” appears on his debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1), identified as the song’s album by both Official Charts and Warner Records.

The album offers wider context, not a key for treating every lyric in “Lose Control” as literal autobiography. In an interview with the Associated Press, Swims described the debut as a heartbreak album and discussed toxic relationship dynamics, substance use, alcohol and struggles with self-worth. Those are themes in his broader account of the album; they should not all be attributed specifically to this single.
The song’s success is best understood through dated milestones rather than as a claim about its current standing. iHeartRadio reported more than 250 million global streams on December 18, 2023. Warner Records later reported nearly 1 billion streams and said the track reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after 32 weeks, in a release dated March 25, 2024. The label also reported that it was platinum-certified in the United States at that time. The Official Charts Company records a No. 2 peak on the UK Official Singles Chart in March 2024. These are historical figures and chart milestones, not current totals or positions, or independently rechecked certification status.

Why the song’s origin matters
The writing-room story links the song’s dramatic vocal performance to a specific emotional conflict: wanting to leave someone while feeling unable to do so. Swims’s own explanation supplies the song’s resolution, too—not that the relationship was healthy, but that recognizing its cost and moving beyond it could be part of healing. The scale of the song’s reach made that personal account something many listeners could connect with, without changing whose experience it began as.
