Tamika Smith met Method Man while working as his personal assistant. Essence reports that they began dating in 1992 and married in 2001; the Washington Post also places their meeting in the early 1990s and confirms the marriage year.
How Tamika Smith met Method Man
Smith and Method Man met through her work as his personal assistant, according to Essence. The reporting does not give a precise date for when she began the job. The Washington Post describes their meeting as taking place in the early 1990s.
From dating to marriage
- They began dating in 1992. Essence gives that specific year. The Washington Post’s broader description of their relationship beginning in the early ’90s is consistent, but does not independently specify 1992.
- They married in 2001. Both Essence and the Washington Post report that year.
Essence reports that Smith and Method Man have three children. The couple has generally kept their family life private.
Why Method Man keeps the relationship private
Method Man has described privacy as a deliberate choice. In a 2024 Essence account of his conversation at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, he said, “We keep people out of our business,” and added of Smith, “She prefers it that way.”

In a Vanity Fair interview published July 16, 2024, Method Man also said: “I’ve been married to the same woman (Tamika Smith) for 30 years, and the fact that my wife and I stay out of the public eye is a blessing in itself.” That was his wording in that interview; the consistently reported timeline anchor is their 2001 marriage.
