“Sur Sangat Raag Vidya” is a traditional Hindustani bandish in Raag Tilak Kamod, set to Rupak taal. Music historian and tabla player Aneesh Pradhan documents how composer Bhaskarbua Bakhale used the same melodic and rhythmic framework for a Marathi natya geet, or stage song, in K. P. Khadilkar’s play Sangeet Swayamwar. It is a clear example of a Hindustani composition adapted for Marathi musical theatre—not evidence that one bandish alone shaped the whole tradition.
What was adapted?
Pradhan identifies “Sur Sangat Raag Vidya” as a traditional bandish in Tilak Kamod, with Rupak taal’s seven-matra cycle. He reports that Bakhale used the same melodic and rhythmic framework for a Marathi natya geet, also described as a natya pada, in Sangeet Swayamwar. The play was written by K. P. Khadilkar and its music was composed by Bakhale, a pairing also recorded in a Maharashtra Balbharati textbook.
“Same framework” is more precise than saying the theatre version is identical in every note or arrangement. The adaptation also changes the piece’s language and function: a Hindustani bandish becomes a Marathi stage song within a drama.
How to hear the relationship
Pradhan’s listening comparison sets three recordings alongside one another: Kesarbai Kerkar singing the original bandish; Bal Gandharva singing the composition at a faster pace; and Bal Gandharva singing the Marathi natya pada based on the Hindustani original. Listen for three things:

- Language and purpose: hear how the Marathi theatrical version serves the play rather than functioning simply as a concert bandish.
Pradhan describes the bandish’s sthayi as emphasizing that theoretical knowledge of raag should be demonstrated through tuneful performance. That is his concise interpretation of the section; it should not be expanded into a full lyric translation without a reliable text and language expertise.
What the example says about Bakhale and natya sangeet
Bakhale’s work helps place this adaptation in a wider musical setting. The Marathi Vishwakosh describes him as a vocalist and composer who absorbed characteristics of the Gwalior, Agra, and Jaipur-Atrauli traditions. It credits him with composing music for plays including Vidyaharan, Swayamvar, and Draupadi, and with training or guiding performers such as Bal Gandharva, Master Krishnarao, and Govindrao Tembe. The encyclopedia characterizes his compositions and mentorship as helping establish the classical character of Marathi natya sangeet.

The NCPA’s overview of Marathi stage music describes a form that draws on several musical traditions, including khayal, thumri, tappa, tarana, ghazal, and devotional music. In that context, the “Sur Sangat Raag Vidya” adaptation is one documented instance of Hindustani material finding a theatrical life. It does not establish a single-source origin for natya sangeet as a whole.

Pradhan says the Marathi natya-pada example comes from a 78 rpm disc. He suggests tabla accompaniment may have been by Ahmed Jan Thirakwa, noting that Thirakwa worked with Gandharva Natak Mandali for some years. The attribution is tentative, not a confirmed credit. Pradhan’s account does not establish an exact label, catalogue number, or release date for this particular disc.
