Manga spoilers: This explains the outcome of the Gojo–Sukuna fight, especially chapter 236. Sukuna won by using Mahoraga’s adaptation as a model for a slash that targeted the space Gojo occupied, rather than trying to cut through Infinity in the ordinary way.
Why Infinity made Gojo so difficult to hit
Gojo’s Infinity is a defensive effect that prevents an incoming attack from reaching him in the usual way. The crucial point in Sukuna’s victory is not that he simply made his slash stronger. He changed what the slash targeted, according to the fight’s fictional power-system logic.
How Mahoraga gave Sukuna a way past Infinity
Mahoraga demonstrated an adaptation
Mahoraga’s adaptation showed Sukuna a working model for an attack that could overcome Infinity. The manga’s explanation makes that example important: Sukuna could use what Mahoraga demonstrated to change his own approach.
Sukuna changed the slash’s target
Rather than treating Gojo himself as the target of a conventional attack that would have to travel through Infinity, Sukuna’s decisive slash targeted the space occupied by Gojo. In the story’s mechanics, that change allowed the attack to reach him. It was a change in the attack’s target rule, not merely an increase in cutting power.

What Akutami reportedly added about Gojo’s reaction
A later comment attributed to creator Gege Akutami addresses Gojo’s awareness, not a different explanation for how the slash worked. ComicBook.com reported on April 19, 2025, that after Mahoraga was defeated, Gojo thought Sukuna no longer had a way past Infinity. The report gives this English wording: “After defeating Mahoraga, Gojo thought that Sukuna had no way to bypass his infinity anymore. I think that the usual Gojo would’ve sensed that something was amiss & could’ve avoided a fatal wound.”

ComicBook.com identifies the wording as a fan translation being discussed at the time, not an official English transcript. MeriStation separately reported the same comment in Spanish. Taken with that qualification, the point is that Gojo’s confidence may have left him less alert to the danger; it does not replace Mahoraga’s adaptation as the tactical explanation for Sukuna’s attack.
