Spoilers for the series finale, “The Rightside Up.” The Hawkins gang defeats Vecna and the Mind Flayer, frees the kidnapped children, and destroys the bridge to the Upside Down. Joyce delivers the final blow to Vecna. The finale then jumps ahead to show where the friends’ lives lead—while leaving Eleven’s fate deliberately uncertain.
How the Hawkins gang defeats Vecna
The final battle begins when the group realizes the apparent Pain Tree is the Mind Flayer. Eleven fights Henry inside the creature as the others coordinate their attacks. Will manages to overpower Henry long enough for Eleven to drive him through a spire; Joyce then kills Vecna with an axe. The group rescues the kidnapped children and returns to Hawkins.
Hopper and Murray set a bomb in the Upside Down. Its detonation collapses the bridge between the two worlds. Joyce’s role in ending the fight is intentional: Ross Duffer said she was the right person to kill Vecna because she was the first in season one to act on her belief that something strange was happening. Netflix Tudum’s interview with the Duffer Brothers discusses that choice.
Does Eleven die in the finale?
The finale does not confirm whether Eleven survives. As the bridge collapses, she appears to be in danger of being lost with it. In the friends’ last Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Mike imagines that Kali used an illusion to help Eleven escape and live in a remote village. That is a hopeful possibility within Mike’s story, not an on-screen confirmation of what happened.

Matt Duffer described the ending as allowing for “this darker, more pessimistic one or the optimistic, hopeful one.” Ross Duffer explained the decision not to give a definitive answer: “We thought it would be beautiful if our characters continued to believe in that happier ending even if we didn’t give them a clear answer to whether that’s true or not.” The creators’ explanation is in Netflix Tudum’s finale interview.

The last campaign gives the friends a way to imagine a future after the events in Hawkins. Mike’s version of Eleven’s escape lets them hold on to a happier outcome, but it does not settle the question for the audience. The series closes the story of the Hawkins group and the Upside Down while leaving that one uncertainty intact.
