How SRT Delivers Secure, Reliable, Low-Latency Video Streaming

SRT can recover missing media packets and encrypt payloads between compatible endpoints, but its reliability and delay depend on network conditions and configuration.

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) moves live audio and video between compatible endpoints over an IP network. It can help a feed withstand packet loss and jitter by requesting retransmission of missing data, while encrypting the media payload. That recovery takes time: SRT can improve reliability without guaranteeing a clean feed, unlimited loss tolerance, or a particular end-to-end delay.

What SRT is—and where it fits

SRT is a transport protocol, not a video codec, encoder, or complete production platform. It carries media from a sending endpoint to a compatible receiver; encoding, decoding, production, and onward distribution remain the work of other parts of the workflow. Haivision describes it as a protocol that detects and adapts to real-time network conditions between endpoints (Haivision’s SRT introduction).

That distinction matters when planning a workflow: both ends must support SRT, and the surrounding equipment or software must still handle the media format and production requirements. SRT can transport a live feed across an unpredictable IP path, but it does not create a source, encode video, or make an incompatible receiver understand the stream.

How SRT recovers from network problems

ARQ retransmits missing data

The SRT project identifies Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) as its primary loss-recovery method. The receiver detects missing packets and requests that the sender transmit them again. The Haivision-maintained project describes SRT as combining error-recovery mechanisms with AES payload encryption in its project README.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Retransmission can repair loss only if the missing data arrives while it is still useful to the receiver. It therefore needs time and network capacity. If the path is too impaired, congestion persists, or the configured latency budget is too tight, some packets may arrive too late—or not be recovered. SRT improves the chance of a usable feed; it does not guarantee one under every network condition.

Latency management gives recovery room

SRT manages latency so the receiver can handle jitter and allow time for retransmissions. A larger recovery window may help when network conditions vary, but it adds delay. A smaller window limits delay while leaving less time to request and receive missing packets. The right balance depends on the path and the production’s tolerance for delay.

The SRT project calls SRT a sub-second live transport protocol, but that is not a promise of a specific glass-to-glass delay for every workflow. Encoding, decoding, SRT’s configured latency, network routing, congestion, buffering, and receiver processing all contribute to the final delay. The available official material does not establish a universal latency setting or a guaranteed packet-loss tolerance.

FEC and connection bonding are additional options

The project also lists Forward Error Correction (FEC) and connection bonding as supported capabilities. These are additional design choices, not features that should be assumed active in every device or stream. Whether they are available and appropriate depends on the endpoints and the workflow.

What SRT encryption protects

SRT uses AES encryption to protect the media-stream payload between configured endpoints. This protects the stream’s content in transit; it does not, by itself, secure the machines running the endpoints, protect credentials, or control who can access the wider production system. Haivision describes SRT’s security and transport role on its SRT product page.

  • Configure encryption consistently at both endpoints.
  • Protect passphrases and other connection credentials rather than sharing them through public or unsecured channels.
  • Secure endpoint devices and manage access to them; transport encryption is not a substitute for those controls.

How to evaluate an SRT implementation

Before choosing software or equipment, map the complete path from sender to receiver. The key questions are compatibility, delay tolerance, expected network conditions, recovery needs, and security configuration.

  • Security operations: Check how encryption and passphrases are configured, distributed, and stored, alongside endpoint access controls.
  • Software or hardware: Determine whether software endpoints meet the workflow’s needs or whether dedicated encoder and decoder equipment is required.

The open-source SRT repository includes a library and sample applications such as srt-live-transmit. For a hardware example, Haivision documents SRT support on Makito X Series encoders and decoders (Makito X Series SRT documentation). These examples establish implementation categories, not that a particular product is necessary for every workflow.

Haivision’s SRT documentation index identifies its displayed pages as protocol version 1.5.3 and says version 1.5.4 is latest; check the documentation index for current implementation details. The version information is documentation-specific and may change.

Does SRT fit a 24/7 YouTube channel?

SRT addresses transport between compatible endpoints. It is not, by itself, a service for continuously looping uploaded videos to YouTube. If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer at home and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. See StreamNeo for details.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera-based live production. Upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
