That can put a tech leader’s post in front of you because you follow its author, have interacted with related topics, or because a platform predicts it may interest you. Some feeds also recommend posts from accounts you do not follow. These are general recommendation mechanisms—not evidence that tech leaders receive special treatment as a category.
Why tech leaders appear in your feed
A post about a technology executive can reach your screen through several stages: the platform makes posts eligible for display, predicts which ones may be relevant, ranks or recommends them, and you decide whether to open, watch, or engage with them. Your interactions may then inform later recommendations. The exact reason for one impression depends on the platform’s current system and your account context; public information does not reveal every input or model decision.
Meta says its Facebook and Instagram systems combine multiple predictions and signals, including activity that may indicate interest, such as sharing, as well as survey feedback. As Nick Clegg, then Meta’s president of global affairs, wrote in the company’s June 29, 2023 explanation, “No single prediction is a perfect gauge of whether a post is valuable to you.” Meta also described system cards covering ranking on Feed, Stories, Reels, and other surfaces, including recommendations from accounts a person does not follow. The company says it withholds some safety signals where disclosure could make evasion easier. Meta’s explanation of how AI influences Facebook and Instagram is a company account of its systems, not a complete independent audit.
A platform’s “Why Am I Seeing This?” explanation, where available, may identify types of activity or other inputs that informed a recommendation. It can help explain a particular suggestion, but it should not be read as a full disclosure of the ranking model.

What the feed changes: availability, ranking, and choice
It helps to separate three questions that are often blurred together:
- Availability: Which posts enter the set the platform might show? A recommendation system can add posts from accounts outside the set you follow.
- Ranking: Which eligible posts appear prominently, and in what order? An algorithmic feed may reorder posts even from followed accounts.
- Choice: What do you actually open, watch, read, or respond to? A recommendation changes what is offered; it does not prove that you viewed or accepted it.
A Belfer Center primer describes recommendation systems in general as drawing on past activity, inferred interests, information about similar users, and context such as time or device to predict relevance or engagement. These are broad system concepts, not a disclosure of every platform’s current implementation. The primer reported YouTube’s estimate that more than 70% of views came from its recommended section rather than self-directed searches or shared links. That is a platform-wide figure reported in 2022; it does not measure news, political material, or tech-leader content specifically. The Belfer Center primer explains the general mechanics.
Do algorithms give tech leaders special treatment?
The available evidence supports applying general feed mechanisms to posts about tech leaders, but it does not establish that platforms rank technology leaders by a distinct rule or systematically favor them as a class. Nor is there a statistic here measuring how often posts about CEOs or other technology figures are recommended. A visible executive may appear frequently because of the accounts you follow, your previous activity, broad audience engagement, or a platform’s predictions; without account-level data, it is not possible to identify which explanation caused a specific appearance.
This distinction matters when asking whether an algorithm “decides who trends.” Ranking can affect visibility and position, but a feed ranking is not the same thing as a platform-wide trend list, and a recommendation does not by itself establish why a person or topic became prominent. The answer depends on the service, surface, and signals involved.

Does a personalized feed create a filter bubble?
Personalization can make some content more visible and other material less prominent. That may make a feed feel narrow or congenial, but exposure patterns and persuasion are separate claims. Showing a person more posts aligned with a presumed interest does not, by itself, prove that the person’s beliefs changed.
A 2024 naturalistic YouTube experiment in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tested recommendation environments that were slanted toward the ideological perspective of the last video watched, alongside recommendations balanced across perspectives. Its design illustrates why researchers distinguish what a system recommends from what users choose and from any later change in attitudes. The PNAS study addresses recommendation exposure and polarization rather than technology-leader content in particular.
Other evidence also cautions against treating “filter bubble” as a settled, universal effect. The 2026 Nature article discussed studies of Google search and YouTube that found little evidence of filter bubbles, while noting that exposure effects could persist after a system is switched off. These results concern particular studies and outcomes; they do not prove that every user’s feed is diverse or that no recommendation system can affect exposure.
What experiments say about political effects
The X experiment
A randomized field experiment reported in Nature on February 18, 2026 assigned actual X users in the United States to algorithmic or chronological feeds for seven weeks in summer 2023. The algorithmic For You feed both introduced posts from accounts users did not follow and reordered posts compared with the Following feed. The researchers found that enabling the algorithmic feed shifted attitudes on policies and current political news in a more conservative direction. They did not find a significant effect on polarization or partisanship. The study’s findings are specific to the platform, users, period, and measured outcomes; they should not be generalized to every platform, country, topic, or exposure duration.

The Meta feed experiment
The same Nature article summarizes a large Facebook and Instagram experiment conducted during the 2020 US election. Replacing algorithmic feeds with chronological feeds substantially changed the content people encountered and reduced engagement, but produced no detectable effects on political attitudes or polarization in the outcomes measured. This does not contradict the X result: the platforms, interventions, time periods, and measured outcomes differed.
Context figures in the Nature article underline why feeds matter to news use, but are not estimates of algorithmic influence on tech-leader visibility: 25% of US adults reported social media as their primary news source, and half said they at least sometimes get news from social media. Neither figure measures how much technology-leader content those adults saw or whether a feed changed their views.
What platforms disclose—and what remains uncertain
Platform explanations can describe broad categories of signals and user controls, while leaving the exact live ranking process opaque. The UK House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee wrote in its 2025 report, “Little is known about the inner workings of social media recommendation algorithms, as it is closely-guarded intellectual property.” The committee said independent research often relies on black-box observations because platforms do not provide full system details, making causal links and the extent of amplification difficult to establish. The committee’s 2025 report, Social media, misinformation and harmful algorithms, sets out those transparency concerns.
That limitation does not make platform explanations useless; it means they answer only part of the question. A company may describe factors that can affect recommendations without showing the relative weight of each factor, all safety rules, or why one particular post appeared at one particular time. Public explanations and independent evidence answer different questions: company materials describe intended system features, while audits and experiments measure particular patterns or effects under particular conditions.

How to change recommendations about tech news
Controls can reduce or increase certain recommendations, switch to a different feed mode, or provide feedback. Labels and availability change, so treat the following as documented options rather than a guarantee that every account has an identical menu today.
Facebook and Instagram
Meta’s June 2023 explainer described Feed Preferences, a Suggested Content Control Center, “Show more, Show less,” Favorites, and chronological options. Facebook’s Feeds and Instagram’s Following views offer chronological alternatives; “Why Am I Seeing This?” is available on selected surfaces. Look in the current app’s feed or content-preference settings for the options offered to your account.
- Open the feed or content-preference controls and find the chronological view if you want to see followed-account posts without algorithmic ordering.
- Use Favorites to prioritize selected accounts where that option is available.
- Choose “Show less” on unwanted suggested content or “Show more” on material you want to see more often, where those controls appear.
- Use “Why Am I Seeing This?” on an eligible recommendation to inspect the explanation the platform provides.
X, Meta, and TikTok
The 2025 UK committee report said users of X, Meta, and TikTok could block keywords and give feedback on individual posts; it also reported recommendation-reset tools from Meta and TikTok. These were features reported to the committee during its evidence period, not a promise of identical current availability in every country or account. If a control is missing, check the service’s current settings and help pages rather than assuming the account has a reset option.
What controls can and cannot do
- Feedback and keyword blocks can help tune what is recommended or hide specified terms; they do not guarantee that all related material disappears from every surface.
- A chronological feed changes ordering and may limit recommendations, but does not necessarily change the underlying set of followed accounts or erase past activity.
- A reset tool, where offered, may restart or alter recommendation signals; the committee’s report does not establish identical reset behavior across services.
- Changing recommendations changes exposure opportunities, not necessarily what you choose to view or what you believe.
How to read a tech-leader recommendation critically
When a CEO, founder, or other tech figure turns up repeatedly, avoid jumping directly from visibility to motive or influence. Check whether the post came from an account you follow or a recommendation; note which feed or surface showed it; and use available feedback or explanation controls if you want to understand or adjust the experience. For claims that a platform systematically promotes a category—or that recommendations changed users’ beliefs—look for evidence measuring that specific population and outcome. The findings about political attitudes on X, for example, do not establish special treatment of technology leaders.

In practical comparisons, ask what the feed can draw from (followed accounts alone or followed and recommended accounts), whether it orders posts chronologically or algorithmically, which personalization inputs the platform actually discloses, and what controls the user can select. Then ask what kind of evidence supports the claim: a platform description, an observational audit, or a randomized experiment. Finally, check the outcome measured. A change in content mix or engagement is not interchangeable with a change in attitudes, polarization, or partisanship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I seeing posts about tech CEOs I don’t follow?
A feed may recommend posts from accounts you do not follow based on predictions about relevance, along with signals such as prior activity or inferred interests. The precise reason for a specific recommendation depends on the platform and your account context. Where available, “Why Am I Seeing This?” may identify some inputs, but it is not a complete explanation of the ranking system.
Does the algorithm decide which tech leaders trend in my feed?
Ranking can affect which posts are prominent in your personal feed, but that is not the same as deciding a platform-wide trend list. The research here found no direct test or statistic showing that tech leaders receive distinct treatment as a category.
Are social media algorithms creating a filter bubble around tech news?
Personalized recommendations can make some posts more visible, but that alone does not prove a user sees only one perspective or that beliefs change. Findings vary by platform and outcome: the cited experiments measured particular changes in content, engagement, attitudes, polarization, or partisanship, not tech-news bubbles generally.

How do I reset or change my recommendations?
Check the current app’s feed and content-preference settings. Meta has described chronological feed options, Favorites, “Show more, Show less,” and other preferences; the UK committee also reported keyword blocking and post feedback on X, Meta, and TikTok, plus reset tools from Meta and TikTok. Availability and labels can vary by account, region, and time.
Does seeing a recommendation mean I watched it or was persuaded by it?
No. A platform may make a post available or rank it prominently, but the user still chooses whether to view or engage with it. Exposure, engagement, and a change in belief are different outcomes and require different evidence.
The Bottom Line
Algorithms shape which posts are eligible and how prominently they appear, but the evidence does not show that tech leaders receive special treatment as a category. Separate exposure from persuasion, consider the platform and outcome behind any claim, and use feed preferences or feedback controls to adjust what you see.
