How Snoopy Celebrated D-Day in Peanuts

On June 6, 1993, Snoopy appeared in a somber D-Day strip ending with the words “June 6, 1944, To Remember.” Later Peanuts tributes marked the invasion in new ways.

Snoopy’s first D-Day tribute appeared in Peanuts on June 6, 1993: a stark three-panel scene that ends with him crawling onto a Normandy beach in a G.I. uniform. Its only words were “June 6, 1944, To Remember.” The Charles M. Schulz Museum identifies the strip as the beginning of Schulz’s D-Day commemorations, a solemn departure from Snoopy’s familiar make-believe dogfights with the Red Baron.

What happens in the June 6, 1993 strip?

The strip moves through three images: Nazi bunkers above a beach, a landing craft carrying faceless soldiers toward shore, and Snoopy in G.I. clothing crawling onto the beach at low tide. There is no comic exchange or punchline. The brief inscription—“June 6, 1944, To Remember”—frames the sequence as a memorial rather than an adventure. The Washington Post describes the strip as unusually grim and realistic for Peanuts. The Washington Post’s account of the strip details its imagery and wording.

Why did Schulz make the tribute?

Schulz had served in World War II. Drafted after high school, he spent three years in the military and became an Army staff sergeant and leader of a machine-gun squadron in Germany, according to the Post. In 1999, he described the historical stakes of D-Day and his admiration for those who took part:

“I think any sensible person with a grasp of history would have to admit that D-Day was the most important day of our century. Without D-Day it’s possible that Europe could have remained for another 25 or 50 years in darkness. I’m glad I wasn’t there, and yet my admiration for the people who were knows no bounds.”

The Museum says Schulz began the anniversary tributes by asking readers to remember the date. The Post also reports that he donated $1 million to the effort to establish the National D-Day Memorial and chaired a fundraising committee.

How did the Peanuts tributes change over time?

Year or occasion Tribute
June 6, 1993 The initial three-panel landing scene, ending with Snoopy crawling ashore and the words “June 6, 1944, To Remember.”
50th anniversary, 1994 A week-long series showed Snoopy acting out events from Operation Overlord, while neighborhood children complained to Charlie Brown about the mess in their yards.
Later anniversaries The tributes were often simplified to Snoopy wading toward the beach beneath the words “To Remember.”
1998 Schulz adapted a photograph of General Dwight D. Eisenhower addressing the 82nd Airborne before the troops left for France, placing Snoopy among the soldiers. The Post says Schulz later called the strip the one that drew more reader response than any other he had drawn.

The Post’s history of Schulz’s D-Day strips also records responses from readers. In a June 12, 1993 letter to the Chicago Tribune, Dorothy Sand of Chicago said the strip “should have been page one news.” In 1996, World War II veteran Robert A. Nottke wrote that he could find no reference to D-Day “with one exception”—Snoopy swimming toward Normandy Beach.

What was D-Day?

D-Day was the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, the opening of Operation Overlord and a major step in establishing the long-requested second front against Nazi Germany. The Washington Post’s 2019 account gives the following scale figures for the operation: three million Allied troops, more than 10,000 airplanes, and nearly 7,000 naval ships. It reports about 425,000 casualties on both sides by the end of the operation later that month. These are figures as reported by the Post; its article does not identify the original statistical source. Read the Post’s historical account.
