Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Snape in HBO’s upcoming series, but casting alone is not enough to judge how his finished portrayal will compare.
How is Snape described in the books?
Wizarding World’s official character guide gives the concise physical description: “He is tall and thin with sallow skin, greasy black hair and a hooked nose.” The guide also identifies Snape as Hogwarts’ Potions master and head of Slytherin. It places him in the dungeons, notes his knowledge of the Dark Arts, and describes him as appearing to hate Harry while favoring students including Draco Malfoy. Those details establish a forbidding first impression, but they are not a complete account of Snape. His loyalties and motives remain uncertain for much of the story; the official franchise retrospective calls him divisive and notes that readers do not learn whose side he is on until the final chapters. How do the actors compare?
A useful comparison separates what is established from what is interpretation. The books provide the physical and narrative baseline. A screen portrayal can then be considered across appearance, performance and how much of Snape’s ambiguity it conveys. Those comparisons are not a simple score of fidelity: a resemblance in hair or silhouette does not by itself establish how well an actor captures the character.

- Silhouette and apparent age: compare Snape’s tall, thin build with the actor’s on-screen appearance, while recognizing that the series is using a different age context.
- Face, hair and costume: consider the book’s sallow skin, hooked nose and greasy black hair alongside the screen styling. Costume and movement also shape the impression.
- Voice and behavior: compare delivery and emotional restraint, and whether the performance communicates menace, pettiness and ambiguity.
- Character information: consider how the adaptation presents Snape’s loyalties and later emotional context, not just his first impression.
Alan Rickman in the eight films
Alan Rickman portrayed Snape in all eight Harry Potter films. The official franchise retrospective reports that J.K. Rowling privately shared a future plot detail with him, which helped him play the character’s ambiguity. Rowling later explained that the detail concerned what lay behind Snape’s word “always.” The retrospective recounts Rowling’s explanation.
The official material establishes Rickman’s role and the context Rowling gave him; it does not offer an authoritative checklist comparing his appearance with every book description or a definitive ranking of his performance. Any judgment about how closely his look or acting matches the novels is an interpretation based on the films and the book descriptions.

Paapa Essiedu in the HBO series
HBO’s official casting announcement, published April 13, 2025, confirms Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and describes him as the series’ Potions professor. Read the casting announcement.
The official series guide says showrunner Francesca Gardiner intends to delve into each book. It also gives Snape’s book-canonical age as 31 in 1991; Gardiner described that as “a very different vibe.” This provides context for the new adaptation, rather than evidence about Essiedu’s performance. The guide stated a Christmas 2026 debut, a schedule that may change. Consult the official series guide.

The official sources confirm Essiedu’s casting and the show’s stated approach, but do not establish a finished performance to compare with Rickman’s or the books. Without released performance material, claims about Essiedu’s costume, resemblance, voice or characterization would be premature.
