In Kumar Shahani’s Kasba, Chekhov supplies a narrative inheritance, while Kangra miniature painting offers a visual grammar for staging its characters. The film brings both into a north Indian family drama about Tejo, who takes control of her father-in-law Maniram’s corrupt business as the family faces a police investigation. Neither source is simply illustrated: the story is transformed for its Indian setting, and the painting tradition shapes performance and composition within a contemporary realist narrative.

What is Kasba adapting from Chekhov?

The Festival des 3 Continents identifies Anton Chekhov’s short story “In the Ravine” as the film’s source. Laleen Jayamanne’s film-studies essay refers to the same story as “In the Hollow”; these are title variations for the Chekhov work, not separate sources. The festival credits Farida Mehta and Kumar Shahani with the screenplay. Festival des 3 Continents film record; Laleen Jayamanne’s essay.

The adaptation shifts the story into a trading family in the Kangra region. The festival synopsis places Tejo in the business run by her father-in-law, Maniram; as police investigate, she begins to assert authority. That premise makes economic control part of the family drama, not just its backdrop.

Maxime Martinot, whose assessment appears on the Festival des 3 Continents film page, captures the adaptation’s ease of relocation: “Kumar Shahani adapted Anton Chekov’s short story, In the Ravine, with disarming ease, as if its original setting had always been India.” The film’s Indian setting is not merely a substitute landscape: it gives the inherited story a specific social world and visual tradition.

How does Kangra painting enter the film?

Jayamanne distinguishes between the house’s existing decoration and Shahani’s more deliberate engagement with miniature painting. The merchant’s house used as a filming location already had folk murals of birds, animals and decorative motifs. Shahani’s choice of that space brought those murals into the film’s visual world; they were not newly created as Kangra miniatures for the production.

The more specific visual reference, in Jayamanne’s account, is the Kangra miniature tradition. She describes its motifs as choreographed through space, gesture, speech and performance, rather than used as decorative quotations. Her reading centres on the Nayika, the leading female figure, and the Sakhi, her maid or confidante. She sees Tejo through the Nayika and reads Tejo and Nandini as a transformed pair.

That interpretation connects painting to film form. A miniature’s pose and frame-within-frame arrangement can become, in cinema, the way an actor moves, how a character is placed near a window, or how the camera composes a room. Jayamanne argues that Shahani translates these relationships into movement and framing, allowing the image to organize how characters occupy and negotiate space.

Why put a painterly visual language inside a family drama?

For Jayamanne, the Kangra references do not interrupt the film’s realist narrative. Their perceived humour and lightness of touch interact with its contemporary family conflict. She relates Tejo’s costuming and movement to the miniature tradition, so that the visual style helps shape how the character’s desire and authority register on screen.

Jérôme Baron’s Festival des 3 Continents essay offers a complementary social reading. He interprets the family microcosm through patriarchal and quasi-feudal structures, economic control and inherited roles. He also stresses the gap between progressive language and the difficulty of turning it into action. In this framework, Tejo’s struggle for power is at once personal and bound up with the family’s social and economic order.

Baron describes Shahani’s use of melodrama as a form of distance, potentially Brechtian, rather than simply an invitation to absorb the story as heightened emotion. That distinction matters: the film’s formal choices can prompt viewers to examine the structures shaping the drama. The visual references to painting, the family’s economic relations and the performance style work together instead of forming separate layers. Jérôme Baron’s Festival des 3 Continents essay.

Which version and runtime do film catalogues list?

Catalogues give different dates and lengths, so those details are best tied to the individual record rather than treated as settled metadata.

Catalogue Year Runtime Other listed details

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 1989 103 minutes Catalogue listing

What makes the connection worth watching for?

Kasba brings its sources together on three levels: Chekhov provides a narrative inheritance; Kangra miniatures offer a way to think about pose, gesture and framing; and the Indian family setting reshapes the story’s concerns around gender, inheritance and economic authority. Watching for those relationships makes the film’s visual design part of its argument, not an ornament laid over the plot.
