Robert Redford changed independent filmmaking by connecting artist development with public exhibition. He founded Sundance Institute in 1981 to help filmmakers develop original work, then the Institute took over and reshaped the existing U.S. Film Festival in 1985. The result was more than an annual showcase: it was a year-round support system paired with a festival where independent films could find audiences and industry attention.
Redford founded the Institute—not the original festival
The distinction is central to Sundance’s history. The Sundance Institute says Redford founded the organization in 1981. Four years later, the Institute assumed creative and administrative control of the pre-existing U.S. Film Festival and expanded it into a 10-day showcase for new American independent narrative and documentary films, along with international work. The event later became the Sundance Film Festival. Sundance Institute’s history
Redford’s connection to the region began earlier. He encountered Provo Canyon during a cross-country motorcycle trip in 1961 and bought land there, according to the Institute. In 1969, he opened Sundance Mountain Resort, naming it after his role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The name that became synonymous with independent film thus began as a place—and, in Redford’s words, an effort to build a community for work outside the mainstream.
“I wanted to have a sense of place, I wanted to create a sense of home, I wanted to create a sense of community,” Redford said. “I wanted to be able to do projects that were different from the run of the mill. That’s how this thing started.”

How the Institute and festival worked together
Year-round development through labs
The Institute’s first filmmaker lab gave emerging filmmakers a setting and advisors to develop original projects. This work mattered because it supported films before they were ready for an audience. The Associated Press has emphasized that Sundance’s year-round labs have been at least as influential as the festival itself in helping launch filmmakers’ first films. That is a different role from selecting and screening completed work: development helps artists shape projects; a festival can give finished films a public platform.
A concentrated showcase for audiences and the industry
The festival offered a gathering point where selected films could be seen and discussed. For filmmakers whose stories were not finding a path through the mainstream system, Redford described the effort as an alternative avenue. In a 2018 interview with the AP, he said he wanted to support independent artists who were not being heard. This was an aspiration and a platform, not a guarantee of distribution or success for every film.

Films that show the platform’s reach
sex, lies, and videotape made the festival harder to overlook
Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape won the Dramatic Audience Award at the 1989 festival. Sundance Institute credits the film’s success with helping establish the festival as a leading forum for independent film. The example shows how a festival screening and audience response could raise a film’s profile; it does not mean the festival alone caused the film’s success or the director’s subsequent career.

Reservoir Dogs linked a lab to a festival premiere
Quentin Tarantino workshopped Reservoir Dogs at the Directors Lab in 1991–1992, and the film premiered at the 1992 festival. The sequence illustrates the distinctive connection between development and exhibition: a project could be worked on within the Institute’s programs and later reach festival audiences.
Smoke Signals reflected a broader commitment to whose stories were seen
In 1994, the Institute created an initiative for Native and Indigenous artists and a festival section to showcase their work. Smoke Signals, written by Sherman Alexie and directed by Chris Eyre, was supported by Sundance and won the 1998 Dramatic Audience Award and Dramatic Filmmaker Trophy. The Institute describes it as the first film written and directed by Native Americans to receive a commercial release. It is a concrete example of the organization supporting artists and visibility for stories that had been underrepresented.

Redford framed the project as more than a search for commercially successful films. He spoke about making room for artistic diversity and creating a community where filmmakers could pursue work outside the conventional mold. “If you want to bring about real, sustained change,” he said, “you have to be constantly aware that you are not just taking care of yourself.” His stated aim was to use the platform to make space for others to create.

That helps explain the lasting change: Sundance made independent film more visible as a cultural category and created an alternative route for some artists to develop work and meet audiences. It did not replace the broader film industry, and the careers of filmmakers associated with Sundance cannot be attributed to one festival or program alone. The Institute’s history and the AP’s reporting point instead to a combination of sustained artist support, public exhibition, and attention to voices that might otherwise have had fewer opportunities.
The scale of the contemporary event is evident in one institutional measure: Sundance Institute reported a record 17,000 film submissions for the 2024 Festival. That figure counts submissions, not films selected, audience attendance, or the festival’s overall impact. Sundance Institute on 2024 submissions
