Early critical notice led to an enduring partnership with Martin Scorsese; roles in The Godfather: Part II, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull established his range and intensity; and two Academy Awards recognized distinct achievements. Later, he expanded his work into directing, producing and building New York film institutions.
How did Robert De Niro first become famous?
De Niro’s career began attracting major attention in 1973, when he appeared in Bang the Drum Slowly and Mean Streets. The following year, De Niro played the young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather: Part II. The role earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. It was a striking early marker of his ability to command a film through controlled, distinctive characterization.
Which movies made Robert De Niro an icon?
The Godfather: Part II: a defining early role
As young Vito, De Niro portrayed a character whose quiet authority had to feel continuous with the older Vito played by Marlon Brando, while also showing the character’s rise. The role won De Niro his first Oscar, for supporting actor. The Television Academy’s career profile and Cannes confirm the performance and award.

Taxi Driver: an unsettling character study
In Scorsese’s 1976 film, De Niro played Travis Bickle, a lonely New York cab driver whose distorted moral outlook drives the story. The American Film Institute discusses the character’s warped sense of right and wrong in its film-club feature on Taxi Driver. De Niro’s official biography says he observed New York cab drivers while preparing for the role; that preparation detail comes from his biography, not an independently documented measure of how he worked.
The Deer Hunter: drama beyond New York crime stories
Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter (1978) became another major entry in De Niro’s early dramatic career. Cannes includes it among his notable films, and the Harry Ransom Center places it among key works of the New Hollywood period in its Robert De Niro collection finding aid.
Raging Bull: the lead-actor Oscar
De Niro’s performance as boxer Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980) won the Academy Award for Best Actor. AFI emphasizes the role’s interior transformation as well as its physical demands. De Niro’s official biography reports that he gained 50 pounds for scenes showing LaMotta later in life; treat that precise figure as an account from the biography rather than a figure corroborated by the institutional film sources cited here.

- Heat (Reed) (Import Dvd) (1999) Al Pacino; Tom Sizemore; Robert De Niro; Val K
Together, these films show why no single performance explains De Niro’s status. He moved among sharply different characters and kinds of dramatic pressure, and his two Oscar-winning roles came in distinct categories: supporting actor for The Godfather: Part II and lead actor for Raging Bull.
Why did Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese work together so often?
Their collaboration began with Mean Streets and continued across decades, giving both artist and director room to explore characters who are difficult, volatile or morally compromised. Films including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino show the partnership’s reach across different stories and stages of their careers. Cannes’ profile traces the collaboration, while AFI’s discussion of Taxi Driver illustrates the character-driven intensity that became one of its signatures.
The partnership was important, but it did not define the full range of De Niro’s screen work. His films also include the action comedy Midnight Run, the comedy Analyze This and the family comedy Meet the Parents, alongside crime films such as Heat. Cannes and AFI document this variety. It helped make him recognizable beyond one genre or one recurring type of role.

How did De Niro expand into directing and producing?
From actor to director
A Bronx Tale (1993) marked De Niro’s directing debut. He later directed The Good Shepherd (2006), extending his involvement from performance to shaping films behind the camera. AFI and the Television Academy identify A Bronx Tale as his debut; the Ransom Center also records The Good Shepherd as a film he directed.
Building a production company and festival
In 1988, De Niro and Jane Rosenthal established Tribeca Productions. They later helped launch the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002, with Cannes describing its founding as a response to the September 11 attacks and AFI recording its launch and early attendance. The festival work gave De Niro a role in sustaining New York’s film culture beyond his own performances.

What honors recognize De Niro’s wider career?
His two Academy Awards are central to his reputation, but career honors also reflect recognition beyond individual performances. AFI named him the recipient of its 31st Life Achievement Award in 2003. Cannes lists the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors, BAFTA’s Stanley Kubrick Award and the 2011 Cecil B. DeMille Award. SAG-AFTRA says he received its 56th Life Achievement Award in January 2020.
These distinctions recognize different parts of his public career: acting, long-term contribution to film and television, and cultural influence. “Hollywood icon” is a description rather than a formal award, but the combination of landmark roles, sustained collaboration, range, honors and institution-building gives the label a concrete basis.
