Rita Ora’s path into Hollywood began with a successful UK pop career, then widened through film roles, television appearances and voice acting. Her casting as Mia Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey brought her into a major film franchise, but the available evidence does not establish a formal “A-list” acting rank. Her story is better understood as a move from chart success into increasingly visible screen work.
Music gave Rita Ora her first major platform
Before her high-profile film roles, Ora was known as a recording artist. Official Charts recounts that her collaboration with DJ Fresh, “Hot Right Now,” topped the UK Official Singles Chart in February 2012. Her solo singles “R.I.P.” and “How We Do (Party)” also reached number one, and her debut album Ora debuted at number one and later earned platinum certification, according to Official Charts’ career retrospective. These are UK chart milestones, not a measure of acting status or worldwide popularity.
That music career also created a prominent connection to the film industry. On January 28, 2015, the Academy announced that Ora would perform “Grateful,” written by Diane Warren for the film Beyond the Lights, at the 87th Academy Awards. The song was nominated for Original Song. The appearance demonstrated her visibility across music and film, though it was a performance rather than an acting award or recognition of an acting rank. The Academy’s announcement also described her 2012 album as certified platinum.
How Rita Ora landed the role of Mia Grey
Ora’s breakthrough franchise casting came with Fifty Shades of Grey, in which she played Mia Grey, Christian Grey’s adopted sister. ABC News reported on July 30, 2014, that she won the part after eight callbacks. Ora described the audition process as stressful and said perfecting an American accent was “incredibly difficult.” The report also noted that she had a small part in Fast & Furious 6 before the casting. ABC News’ 2014 report is the source for the callback account.

The casting illustrates how a singer can move into acting through an audition and a specific role; it does not show that her music fame alone secured the part. Mia’s place in a widely recognized franchise gave Ora a conspicuous screen credit and an entry point to more film work.
Her screen work expanded beyond Fifty Shades
Ora’s credits span several kinds of screen work. Apple’s catalog profile lists appearances in Southpaw, Twist, Wonderwell, the Fifty Shades films and 2024’s Descendants: The Rise of Red. Apple’s profile is useful as a broad credit index; individual production credits are the better authority for details about a particular role or release.

Television appearances also formed part of Ora’s work during a period when her music career was interrupted. Official Charts’ retrospective describes a delay to her second album, a dispute with Roc Nation in 2015, a settlement in May 2016 and a period away from music, alongside screen and television work. It then recounts her return to the upper end of the singles chart with “Anywhere” and “For You.” That sequence establishes timing, not that acting caused her musical comeback.
Voice acting added a different kind of role
In Netflix’s Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, Ora voiced Wandering Blade. A Netflix Tudum interview published July 15, 2022, identified the part as her first major voice-acting role. Ora contrasted recording dialogue with her music work: “I’m definitely used to singing more than talking.” Netflix’s interview was edited for length and clarity.

Voice work differs from appearing on camera: an actor builds a character through dialogue rather than facial expression and physical presence. For Ora, it added animation to a résumé already spanning music, live television and film.

“Hollywood A-lister” is a promotional description, not a status independently established by the available sources. The record supports a more specific account: Ora had major UK chart success, was cast in a prominent film franchise, accumulated other screen credits and took a leading voice role in an animated series. These milestones show visibility and range, but they do not supply a formal Hollywood ranking or a comparable measure of acting fame.

Music achievement and acting recognition should be kept on separate axes. Official Charts reported in a July 2023 interview that, after “Let You Love Me” in 2018, Ora became the British female solo artist with the most Top 10 singles in chart history and still held that record at the time of publication. That is a UK chart category and a claim bounded by the interview date—not an acting accolade or a timeless global record. The interview also covered her album You & I, which Ora called her “most artistic album yet.”
Ora’s Hollywood-facing career, then, is a story of expansion rather than a verifiable ascent through an official A-list system: music opened the door to public visibility, franchise casting created a recognizable film credit, and subsequent screen and voice roles broadened her work.
