The busy 1984 Bhopal Junction in The Railway Men was built from scratch. Production designer Rajat Poddar and the crew recreated the station, industrial interiors and adjoining slum setting because modern locations and surviving trains could not supply the period look the series needed.
Why the production built Bhopal Junction
For the Netflix and YRF series, the station had to evoke Bhopal in 1984. But real Bhopal Junction and other possible stations had been modernised, while the locomotives and coach designs required for the period were no longer available. A location that was authentic in name would not necessarily look right on camera.
Poddar designed the station as the story’s central environment. As he put it to Scroll.in, “The station is the heart of the story.” Building it gave the filmmakers control over the period details and the space actors needed to move through the scenes.
Research made the reconstruction specific
The design drew on archival photographs and footage, which provided visual evidence for how the railway environment looked. The team also visited the actual Union Carbide factory to establish the dimensions of its tanks. Indian Railways officials advised on mechanical details that photographs alone could not confirm.

That mix of references mattered at both large and small scales. The factory visit helped ground the industrial setting; railway advice informed the constructed trains. And details such as a 1984 Hindi film poster or worn platform tiles helped make the station feel lived-in rather than newly assembled. Poddar described such choices as “small elements” that “are a part of the ambience that transport you to that era.”
A large set built for movement
The station occupied a substantial Mumbai site and took nearly two months to construct, according to Scroll.in’s 2023 interview with Poddar. Accounts give different measurements: Poddar told Scroll.in that the platform was at least 600 feet long, while director Shiv Rawail described a 500-foot-long station with two platforms in a 2023 IANS report. These are attributed figures from separate accounts, not a single agreed measurement.

The production used seven locomotives, including trains heading toward Bhopal and an engine in a repair shed, Scroll.in reported. Rather than rely on static façades, the crew mounted locomotive shells over trucks so the trains could move through the set. That practical approach gave performers something tangible to interact with and helped the scenes work in space, not just in the frame.
Practical builds and visual effects served different needs
Physical construction supplied the environments actors occupied: platforms, train exteriors and industrial spaces. Visual effects could add details that were difficult or too costly to build physically, including elements of the gas-leak scenes at night. The two methods were complementary, not competing ways to make the setting look real.

Rawail told IANS, “We relied on the old-school filmmaking of practical effects to render an authenticity to the story.” Poddar likewise stressed that technology and budget mattered less than having a clear visual idea: “Visual effects can be extremely helpful – what you need is proper vision, rather than technology or budgets.”

Inside the industrial spaces, Poddar used a cold palette that moved through blues and greens toward yellow-green. Red was held back for a wedding scene, giving that moment a distinct visual character against the cooler surroundings. “We stuck to a scheme of cold colours,” he told Scroll.in.

His approach also depended on restraint. As he put it, “You have to know when to stop and how much to do.” The design aimed to give the audience enough evidence to believe in the period and place without letting detail overwhelm the action.
