It is not the same as a separate Harry-led film mentioned in September 2026 reporting: that was described as one possibility for honoring Diana, not a confirmed or finalized production. The existing documentaries take markedly different approaches, from Diana’s own recorded voice to archival footage and journalistic reporting.
That distinction is important when comparing “Prince Harry’s documentary about Princess Diana” with other Diana documentaries. The films do not all try to answer the same questions: some offer a family remembrance, some focus on Diana’s testimony, and others examine the public record or a particular moment in her life. Their different source material shapes both what viewers can learn and what each film cannot establish on its own.
Which Diana documentary did Prince Harry make?
Harry appeared with William in Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, released in 2017. The film is a personal remembrance: the brothers share memories of their mother, revisit photographs, and reflect on her humanitarian work and legacy. It is the completed Diana documentary most directly connected to Harry.
A separate project was discussed in a PEOPLE report syndicated by AOL on September 21, 2026. The report said Harry was exploring ways to honor Diana and that a documentary was one possibility under discussion. It did not say a film had been commissioned or finalized, and it provided no confirmed title, format, production team, release date, or editorial approach. Netflix announced a first-look deal with Archewell in 2025, but that announcement did not identify a Diana documentary: Netflix’s announcement of the Archewell deal.

So, for now, comparisons should be made with the 2017 film, not an imagined future production. The report does not establish whether a possible new project would use family interviews, archive, reporting, or another format. Nor does the Archewell deal confirm that such a project is in development. Any account of a new Harry-led Diana film should keep those unknowns clear until Harry, Archewell, Netflix, or another reliable direct source confirms more.
How the documentaries differ
The clearest way to compare these films is to ask whose perspective organizes the story, what evidence the film uses, and which part of Diana’s life it covers. A son’s recollections, Diana’s recorded testimony, period footage, and a reporter’s interviews offer distinct kinds of insight; none should be mistaken for a complete or interchangeable account.
| Documentary | Primary perspective and material | Its focus |
|---|---|---|
| Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy (2017) | William and Harry’s memories, personal photographs, and reflections | Family life, humanitarian work, and legacy |
| Diana: In Her Own Words (2017) | Recordings of Diana’s 1991 interviews | Diana speaking in her own voice |
| Diana, 7 Days (2017) | Recollections from close confidantes and accounts of public mourning | The week after the fatal Paris crash, through the funeral |
| The Princess (2022) | Archival video and audio | Media and public scrutiny of Diana, in a chronological portrait |
| Diana: Chasing a Fairytale (2017) | Clarissa Ward’s reporting and interviews with people connected to Diana and the crash | A reported retrospective with attention to the Paris crash and investigations |
In practical terms, these works differ along four useful axes: first-person testimony versus family recollection versus journalistic reporting; a life-and-legacy scope versus a focus on the final week or death; archival footage versus new interviews; and how explicitly a film signals the limits of its own perspective. These distinctions help explain why two documentaries about the same person may feel very different without one necessarily replacing the others.
Diana, Our Mother: a family-centered portrait
The 2017 film’s defining feature is that Diana’s sons structure the story. William and Harry recall her as their mother, use personal photographs as points of connection, and discuss her public work and legacy. This gives viewers access to the brothers’ memories and relationship with Diana rather than an attempt to build a comprehensive account from multiple outside witnesses.
That distinction matters when weighing what the film can establish. A family remembrance can convey personal feeling and lived experience, but it is not the same as a journalistic investigation or a reconstruction based on Diana’s own testimony. Its value lies in the sons’ perspective and the family material they chose to share.
It is also a useful point of comparison for a possible future Harry-led project—but only as an example of an approach Harry has already taken alongside William. The 2017 film does not reveal what a separate project, if one proceeds, would look like. A solo film could not be presumed to repeat its structure or subject matter based on the available reporting.

Diana: In Her Own Words: Diana’s recorded voice
Diana: In Her Own Words centers on recordings from interviews Diana gave in 1991. National Geographic says the interviews were recorded with her permission and that the documentary contains no interviews. The result is a film built around Diana speaking, rather than commentators interpreting her words on camera. The recordings were made for Andrew Morton while he was writing a book about Diana, a piece of context for their origin.
A first-person account has a particular strength: viewers hear Diana’s perspective directly. It also has a boundary. National Geographic describes the film as presenting one side of a complicated story; the absence of interviews means the documentary does not supply a range of interviewees to test or contextualize every account. Diana’s voice is evidence of what she said and how she described her experience, not by itself a multi-sided reconstruction.

The book Diana: Her True Story by Andrew Morton is therefore optional companion context, not another documentary or a substitute for one. Its relevance is that the recordings used in the film were made for Morton while he was writing about Diana. A viewer interested in where the recorded material originated may find that connection helpful, while the film itself remains centered on Diana’s voice.
National Geographic has also cited a figure of 750 million viewers for Diana’s wedding, attributing the number to the BBC. That is a historical audience figure as presented by the broadcaster’s documentary coverage, not a measure of documentary viewership or current television audiences. It provides context for the scale of public attention around Diana, but it should not be used to compare the audiences of these films.
Tom Jennings, executive producer of the National Geographic documentary, described one interpretation of Diana’s legacy this way: “Some people give her a lot of credit for modernizing the royal family by making it more engaged.” The comment is best read as an attributed view about her legacy, rather than as a neutral measurement or a conclusion shared by every documentary in this comparison.
Diana, 7 Days: the week of mourning
Diana, 7 Days narrows its lens to the period after Diana died in the Paris crash. Vogue describes a film focused on the week before her funeral, including recollections from close confidantes and the public response. Its subject is not Diana’s whole life but the grief, events, and public mourning that followed her death.

This limited time frame makes the film useful for understanding the funeral period and the intensity of public reaction. It should not be treated as a complete biography or as a documentary primarily about the circumstances of the crash. Its focus is the aftermath: what the week contained for people close to Diana and for a mourning public, rather than a full examination of her life or death.
The Princess: a portrait assembled from media coverage
The Princess (2022) uses archival video and audio, with media attention and public scrutiny at the center of its portrait. TIME and Vogue describe its emphasis on the pressures Diana faced from the press and public. Rather than relying mainly on new interview testimony, it constructs its account from period material, placing viewers close to the images and sounds through which Diana became a public figure.
That makes it particularly useful for a comparison about how the media treated Diana. Archive can show the coverage as it appeared at the time and let viewers encounter its tone and repetition. At the same time, a sequence of clips is not the same as a complete explanation of every event depicted. Archival footage can reveal how Diana was represented and pursued in public, but footage alone does not settle contested interpretations of events. The film’s evidence is strongest as a record of what was captured and broadcast; viewers should distinguish that record from conclusions that require context beyond the images themselves.
Diana: Chasing a Fairytale: reported retrospective
CNN describes Diana: Chasing a Fairytale as a two-hour special reported by correspondent Clarissa Ward. Its interviewees include friends, a first responder, a coroner, Diana’s former personal secretary, a former police commissioner, and others connected to her life and death. This makes it a more explicitly reported account than the family-centered Diana, Our Mother or the voice-led Diana: In Her Own Words.
The range of interview roles matters to the film’s approach: it brings together people connected to different parts of Diana’s life and the crash rather than relying on a single family point of view or solely on archival material. That does not make every interview a complete account, but it gives the special a reporting structure that differs from the other titles here.
The crash is a focus of the special, but its conclusions should be attributed precisely. CNN’s announcement says the conclusion that the crash was accidental came from French and British investigations. That is not a reason to treat sensational claims about Diana’s death as established fact; the film’s reporting and the investigations it references should be understood on their own stated terms.

Which film is the best starting point?
- For Harry and William’s memories of their mother: choose Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.
- For Diana’s own recorded account: choose Diana: In Her Own Words, while keeping in mind that it presents her perspective rather than a multi-sided interview documentary.
- For the public response immediately after her death: choose Diana, 7 Days.
- For a media-centered portrait built from period footage: choose The Princess.
- For reporting that brings together witnesses and people connected to her life and death: choose Diana: Chasing a Fairytale.
These are choices by approach, not a ranking of which film is most definitive. If the question is “Which film gives the fullest account?”, the answer depends on what kind of account the viewer wants: personal memory, Diana’s own recorded perspective, the public reaction, a record of media coverage, or reported interviews. It can be more useful to watch them as distinct lenses than to treat them as competing versions of one definitive biography.
These choices also help keep documentaries distinct from dramatizations such as Spencer or The Crown. The films compared here use testimony, interviews, reporting, or archival material; a scripted drama is a different form and should not be treated as a documentary source about Diana.
Where can you watch the Diana documentaries?
Current streaming availability is not established here. TIME and Vogue’s viewing guides date from 2022, and platform rights can change by country and over time. Check a current listing for your country or the documentary distributor’s official page before relying on an older watch guide.
There is no single availability answer that can safely be applied everywhere without checking the viewer’s country and the date of access. If using a watch guide, check when it was published and whether it names a platform in the relevant territory. Do not infer current streaming rights from a 2022 listing, and do not assume that a possible future Harry-led project is available or even confirmed.

Which Diana documentary focuses on the week after her death?
Diana, 7 Days focuses on the week before Diana’s funeral, including accounts from close confidantes and the public mourning, according to Vogue. It is an aftermath-focused film, not a full biography.
Which documentary focuses on media scrutiny of Diana?
The Princess (2022) uses archival video and audio, with press and public scrutiny at the center of its portrait. Archival material records what was captured and broadcast, but it does not by itself settle every interpretation of events.
Is there confirmed streaming availability for these documentaries?
Not from the sources reviewed here. TIME and Vogue’s viewing guides date from 2022, and availability can change by country. Check a current local listing or the distributor’s official page before relying on an older guide.
Is Diana: Her True Story another documentary?
No. Andrew Morton’s book is optional companion context. The 1991 interviews later used in Diana: In Her Own Words were made for Morton while he was writing a book about Diana.
The Bottom Line
Harry’s completed Diana documentary is the 2017 family remembrance he made with William, not a separate confirmed new production. To compare it with other Diana documentaries, start with each film’s evidence and point of view: family memories, Diana’s recorded voice, archival media, accounts of public mourning, or reported interviews. A September 2026 report described a new Harry-led documentary only as a possibility, with no confirmed title, format, team, release date, or editorial plan.
