Paul Heyman says Roman Reigns’ Tribal Chief character drew inspiration from Marlon Brando’s Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. At the Barrett Sports Media Summit, Heyman said he had Reigns watch the film multiple times as they discussed the character’s presentation: a leader powerful enough to rule an island, yet burdened—and embittered—by the people who depend on him.
Apocalypse Now was the creative reference
Heyman identified Brando’s Colonel Kurtz as a model for the Tribal Chief. In remarks reported from the Barrett Sports Media Summit, he said: “The character of Roman Reigns as the Tribal Chief, by way of example, is inspired by Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.”
Heyman said he had Reigns watch the film multiple times while they discussed how to present the character. He described the central image as “a warrior so great that he conquered his own island.” The connection was a thematic influence, not a claim that the WWE character reproduces Kurtz’s story scene for scene. WrestleTalk reported Heyman’s explanation; Fightful also reported the remarks.
How Kurtz’s island became the “Island of Relevancy”
Heyman translated the island idea into WWE terms. Reigns’ “Island of Relevancy” is a world in which the Tribal Chief occupies the center: performers and fans look to him, and his authority rests on their recognition and dependence. The comparison helps explain the character’s scale and self-image—he is not merely a champion, but a leader who expects others to orient themselves around him.

Heyman’s analogy also supplies the character’s darker edge. He described Reigns as feeling the weight of leadership: “He feels the burden of the responsibility, of the obligation, of the accountability, to be the leader of all these people.” In Heyman’s account, that burden curdles into resentment. Each person who acknowledges Reigns becomes, in the character’s mind, another person whose needs and expectations he must carry. That tension—demanding recognition while resenting what recognition entails—helps account for the Tribal Chief’s villainy. Sports Illustrated covered Heyman’s explanation of that leadership burden.
What “Acknowledge me” says about the character
The catchphrase expresses the recognition the character seeks. In a separate interview, Heyman connected Reigns’ demand to Jey Uso: Reigns wanted Jey to acknowledge him. Heyman framed the underlying motive this way: “What does the character want? What does ‘The Tribal Chief’ need? What does ‘The Head of the Table’ seek? Acknowledgment.” This was a separate account about the catchphrase, not the Barrett Sports Media Summit discussion of the film. Wrestling Inc. reported Heyman’s comments about its origin.

When the character took shape
Reports place Reigns’ Tribal Chief turn in 2020, when he joined forces with Heyman and began the Jey Uso storyline. Heyman’s explanation of the Apocalypse Now influence was reported in March 2024. Those dates distinguish the character’s emergence on WWE television from the later public account of its creative reference. Fightful’s report and WrestleTalk’s coverage attribute the explanation to Heyman’s summit remarks.
