One Battle After Another is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, but it is not a scene-by-scene adaptation. Paul Thomas Anderson takes a family-and-pursuit thread from the 1990 novel and reshapes it into a contemporary political thriller. Its Trump-era resonance is real as an interpretation of the film’s setting and imagery—not evidence that the story was written in response to Donald Trump’s reelection.

Is One Battle After Another based on Vineland?

Yes, in a selective sense. A scholarly study in the journal Adaptation describes the 2025 film as “inspired by” Pynchon’s 1990 novel. Both stories include an ex-revolutionary, a daughter, a missing mother, and pursuit by a government agent. But the film changes the characters, timeline, setting, events, and circumstances; Vineland is a source of material, not a blueprint for the movie. Read the study in Adaptation.

Anderson’s own shorthand for the connection, quoted in the study, is “it is but it isn’t.” That qualification captures the relationship better than a simple label such as “faithful adaptation.”

What did Anderson take from the novel—and what did he change?

Anderson has said that adapting Vineland directly proved difficult. In an Esquire interview, he recalled considering what the novel’s story meant in the early 2000s, then joining material from it to a separate story about a female revolutionary. The project’s strands accumulated over roughly two decades. “Vineland was always going to be too hard to adapt, so I stole the parts that spoke to me and just started running like a thief,” he said. The result preserves a recognizable emotional and dramatic core—the revolutionary past intruding on a parent’s effort to protect a daughter—while inventing a different chain of events. That approach also makes the movie stand on its own: viewers do not need to know Pynchon’s novel to follow the film, though reading it offers a way to see what Anderson selected and transformed.

Further reading: Read Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland alongside the film if you want to trace its source material. The novel is useful context, not a complete account of the movie’s plot.

How does the film translate Vineland’s politics?

Vineland moves between the 1960s counterculture and the reactionary politics of the Reagan era. One Battle After Another relocates related concerns—political resistance, state power, and the afterlife of revolutionary commitments—to a contemporary setting. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw reads the film’s imagery in connection with immigration enforcement and current US politics, and describes its form as an action-driven, comic political thriller. Those are critical interpretations of the movie, not neutral statements of Anderson’s intent. Read the Guardian review.

Jonathan Lethem makes an important timing distinction in the New York Review of Books: the film was prepared and shot before Trump’s reelection, even as its imagery came to feel strikingly resonant with later political developments. That supports calling the movie Trump-era in its reception or political frame; it does not establish that Trump’s reelection caused Anderson to write the story. Read Lethem’s essay.

Why does the father-daughter story matter?

The film’s political material is anchored in a family relationship. In a Los Angeles Times interview, Anderson described the emotional pull of making a story about a father desperately trying to find and protect his daughter: “If you’re a dad and you’re making a movie about a dad who’s desperately trying to find and protect his daughter, you are going to feel that deeply.” Read the interview.

That family-centered line helps explain why the film’s connection to Vineland is more than a borrowed premise. Anderson carries forward the collision between a revolutionary past and a parent’s present responsibilities, while changing the story’s world and dramatic shape.

A useful way to compare the film and the book

Aspect Vineland One Battle After Another
Historical frame 1960s counterculture and Reagan-era reaction A contemporary political setting
Story connection Contains a strand involving aging revolutionaries, a daughter, and pursuit Reworks a related family-and-pursuit strand, with changed characters, chronology, setting, and events
Political emphasis Counterculture and counter-revolution Related concerns reframed through current political imagery; interpretations of that imagery vary
Form and tone Novel; the cited sources do not characterize it in directly comparable terms Action-driven, comic political thriller, in Bradshaw’s description

The comparison is most revealing when it asks what changed and why, rather than trying to assign the film a percentage of fidelity. Anderson’s adaptation is meaningful precisely because it transforms the source instead of reproducing it.
