How old was Selena when she married Chris Pérez?
Selena was 20 at the time of the wedding. The Texas State Historical Association’s Handbook of Texas biography, written by Cynthia E. Orozco, gives her birth date as April 16, 1971, and her marriage to Christopher Pérez as April 2, 1992. That places the wedding exactly two weeks before her 21st birthday.
How do the dates confirm her age?
Selena had turned 20 on April 16, 1991. She married on April 2 of the following year, before reaching April 16, 1992, when she would turn 21. The wedding year alone can be misleading; the month and day establish that she was still 20.
What did Selena and Chris Pérez say about her age?
Two archived excerpts corroborate the age. In an October 11, 1995 testimony transcript, Pérez answers “Twenty” when asked how old Selena was; the excerpt is available in the SelenaTrial transcript archive. An interview excerpt attributed to Selena records her saying, “I was 20 when I got married,” and identifies April 2 as her anniversary; it appears in the SelenaForever interview archive. These excerpts support the dates reported in the Handbook of Texas.
