The NCIS and NCIS: Origins crossover told one case across two eras: the younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks investigate a naval officer’s death in 1990s California, then the present-day NCIS team reopens that case after a prison break. The producers coordinated the episodes so one could set up story elements for the other to pay off—and used the decades between them to explore how people carry, and sometimes release, the past.
How did the showrunners make the crossover?
Rather than treating the event as two unrelated episodes with a shared label, the producers built a single investigation across both shows. The NCIS: Origins installment aired first and established the case; the modern NCIS episode returned to it after a prison break prompted a reopening. In a November 6, 2025 interview with TV Insider, executive producers Gina Lucita Monreal and Steven D. Binder described a back-and-forth process of deciding what one episode could set up and what the other could pay off.

Binder said the central challenge was finding a case that could span decades and remain both interesting and emotionally compelling, while keeping the characters meaningfully involved despite the time gap. Monreal saw the passage of time itself as a poignant storytelling opportunity. The episodes connect their timelines through the investigation, younger and older versions of characters, archived files and interrogation tapes, and the present-day team’s reflections on its history.
Two installments, two story jobs
| Installment | Timeline | Story function | Character perspective |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCIS: Origins | 1990s | Begins the investigation into a naval officer’s death in Serenity, California. | Younger Gibbs and Franks. |
| NCIS | Present day | Reopens the case after a prison break. | The current NCIS team, looking back through the case’s history. |
The two episodes aired on November 11, 2025, with the Origins hour first. The structure lets the original investigation and its later consequences illuminate each other, rather than asking the viewer to treat the time jump as a simple change of setting.

Why did Mark Harmon return onscreen as Gibbs?
Harmon had narrated NCIS: Origins, but the crossover marked his onscreen return as Gibbs in the prequel since its pilot. The showrunners initially considered opening the Origins hour with a collection of earlier Gibbs clips. David J. North and Monreal instead decided that the two-show event offered a good moment to check in with Gibbs directly. Their explanation was reported by CinemaBlend and Parade.
The episode, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” gives that appearance a character-based entry point: Gibbs shelters from a snowstorm in his remote Alaska cabin with a stray rescue dog. The encounter leads him to think about the past and narrate the earlier case. Parade reported that the dog reminded Gibbs of Gary Callahan, the NIS dog from Camp Pendleton. North said he and Harmon had worked on dog stories before; the showrunners called Harmon, and he agreed to return. The dog was their creative way into Gibbs’s memories, not a reported on-set improvisation or a production necessity.
What connects the case to Gibbs’s Rule 11?
The story also traces the origin of Gibbs’s Rule 11: “When the job is done, walk away.” Franks gives Gibbs the advice, but the case shows that Franks himself has trouble following it. That contradiction gives the rule more weight than a neat piece of procedural wisdom: the person offering it is still wrestling with what the job leaves behind.
Monreal explained that recording every painful memory in Gibbs’s notebook risks making the burden too heavy. Letting some of it go, she said, is necessary to embrace a life beyond the job. In that sense, the investigation links the two episodes, while Rule 11 links their views of work, memory, and grief. Monreal’s explanation and North’s comments on the collaboration appear in Parade’s November 11, 2025 account.
