There is no fixed storage requirement for a 24/7 prerecorded children’s YouTube channel. If you replay a finite playlist, you need space for the distinct videos in that playlist—not a year of new footage. At YouTube’s recommended 1080p standard-frame-rate video bitrate plus recommended stereo audio, plan on roughly 3.8 GB per hour of source video. Your actual files’ sizes are the best basis for a final estimate.
What determines the storage you need?
Storage depends on two things: the total runtime of the distinct video files you keep and their combined encoded video-and-audio bitrate. Broadcasting continuously does not mean you must retain a continuously growing year of unique programming. A one-hour source playlist can repeat around the clock; the source library remains about one hour of files unless you also retain archives, backups, or new content.
Choose what you are sizing before choosing a drive:
- Looping library: the distinct source videos used in the rotation.
- Unique programming archive: new material retained for each broadcast hour or day.
- Backups and working files: separate copies, project assets, alternate exports, and files in production.
YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance describes sending media segments to the platform. That delivery process does not require a year of unique source material when a finite playlist is repeated. See YouTube’s DASH ingestion guide.

Estimate storage from bitrate and runtime
For decimal units, use this approximate formula:
Storage in GB ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × unique duration in hours × 0.45
The factor converts megabits per second over an hour into decimal gigabytes. It is an arithmetic estimate and excludes filesystem or container overhead, project files, alternate exports, backups, and other copies. Divide decimal GB by 1,000 to get decimal TB.

YouTube Help recommends MP4 with H.264 video, common frame rates, and different bitrates depending on resolution and frame rate. Its SDR recommendations include 720p at 5 Mbps for standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates, and 1080p at 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps respectively. Recommended stereo audio is 384 kbps (0.384 Mbps). The estimates below add that stereo-audio rate to each video rate; they are planning examples, not measured file sizes or a YouTube storage requirement. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.

The 24-hour and year columns assume that every hour is distinct and retained. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate example, a one-hour playlist is about 3.8 GB, while a daily 24-hour set of unique videos is about 90.5 GB. A year of unique programming at that rate is about 33.1 decimal TB before overhead and extra copies.

Use actual file sizes for a channel-specific estimate
Recommended bitrates are useful when planning an export, but they do not determine every file’s final size. Variable-bitrate encodes vary with content and encoder settings. If you already have the videos, add their actual file sizes; this automatically reflects their chosen codecs, bitrates, runtimes, and audio.
- Decide whether you are counting only the rotation library, broadcast archives, or both.
- List each distinct file you will retain and add its size. Do not count the same file twice unless you are sizing a separate copy.
- Add any additional planned content over your retention period. For example, if each day has a new 24-hour playlist, count each day’s unique files.
- Separately add capacity for project files, alternate exports, working space, and recoverable backup copies.
- Allow for future growth based on how often you add material and how long you keep it.
If you do not yet have the files, use the formula with the total bitrate and distinct runtime. For different audio formats, mono or 5.1 audio, HDR, higher frame rates, or other encoding settings, use the actual combined bitrate rather than the stereo SDR examples. YouTube’s guidance lists 5.1 audio at 512 kbps and higher SDR rates for HDR.

Resolution, frame rate, and audio change the estimate
Higher bitrate means larger files for the same runtime. Resolution alone is not enough to calculate storage: frame rate, image complexity, codec, encoder settings, and audio all affect the result. YouTube’s official guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
If you have an export, its file size is more reliable than a generic bitrate estimate. If you are planning future exports, use your intended combined bitrate and runtime, then leave room for copies and growth. The figures in the table use decimal units: 1 TB is 1,000 GB, not 1,024 GB.

Local drives, archives, and backups
A local external desktop hard drive can hold a source library, but capacity should follow your own file totals and retention plan. Seagate lists an 8TB Expansion Desktop model; that product listing does not make 8TB a universal recommendation for a channel. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate estimate, 8 decimal TB corresponds to roughly 2,100 hours of encoded files before overhead, backups, and other uses. A backup is a separate recoverable copy of your important files. RAID or other redundancy is not a backup by itself if it does not give you a separate copy that can be recovered after loss or damage. Include each full duplicate in your storage budget.
