Live streaming can cost nothing in software if you already have a suitable device and use a free tool such as OBS Studio. It can also involve paid studio subscriptions, platform-plan fees, equipment, or delivery charges that grow with audience size and video quality. There is no single reliable “average” price: the total depends on what you stream, where it is hosted, how many people watch, and which features you need.
What goes into a live-streaming budget?
Separate one-time purchases from recurring fees and usage-based charges. A setup using an existing computer, phone or camera and free software may avoid a software bill, but that does not establish that every platform or event workflow is free.
| Cost category | What may drive the cost | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Studio features such as branding controls, recording quality, multistreaming and guest capacity | Free-tier limits, billing period, included features and renewal terms |
| Platform or event access | Whether live events are included in the plan and any concurrency or duration limits | Eligibility rules for the specific platform and plan |
| Camera and setup | Whether you need to buy a camera or can use a phone or built-in camera | Requirements for the workflow you choose; a dedicated webcam is not universally necessary |
| Audience delivery | Viewer count, watch time, playback quality and delivery architecture | Whether delivery is included, subject to a threshold or billed by usage |
| Cloud infrastructure | Encoding, ingest, packaging, origination and distribution at the selected scale | Region, resolution, bitrate, duration, cache assumptions and current rates |
Can you live stream for free?
Free software
OBS Studio describes its live-streaming and recording software as free and open source. If you already have a suitable device and the platform supports your chosen workflow, you can begin without paying for streaming software. Free software does not make hardware, internet service, platform eligibility or large-scale delivery universally free.
Paid studio tools are optional
StreamYard lists both free and paid plans. A paid plan may be relevant if you need a particular studio feature, but its prices and inclusions can change; the company’s pricing page says promotions, renewal terms and custom offers can affect what a customer pays. Check the live plan details before choosing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Equipment depends on the workflow
There is no supported universal equipment basket or startup total. Vimeo’s live-event workflow, for example, calls for a camera connected to a supported encoder. That requirement is specific to Vimeo; other workflows may work with a phone or a built-in camera. Do not assume you need to buy a dedicated webcam before checking the requirements of your platform and setup.
Platform plans can set the entry price and limits
Platform rules are not interchangeable. Vimeo says live events require Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with the Events feature added. Its documentation describes up to two or three concurrent streams depending on plan, and a 12-hour limit per stream. Those are Vimeo-specific conditions, not general rules for live streaming.

Before committing, verify whether the plan supports the event format you need, how many simultaneous streams it allows, and whether there is a maximum stream length. A plan that works for one occasional broadcast may not fit a channel running multiple events or long sessions.
Why audience growth can raise delivery costs
Audience delivery is where a modest creator-software bill can diverge sharply from the cost of serving a large event. Vimeo identifies viewer count and playback quality as primary bandwidth factors. Its Help Center describes a 2 TB (2,000 GB) monthly bandwidth threshold for its plans; it is a Vimeo policy threshold, not a universal fee. Vimeo says accounts exceeding the intended threshold can discuss custom or enterprise arrangements. Its help page says custom usage is priced per GB with volume discounts but does not give one universal per-GB price.

For a sense of scale—not a typical creator bill—Amazon Web Services’ 2025 guide models the following one-hour events:
| AWS example | Modeled event cost | Key qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately 1,000 viewers at 540p for one hour | About $69.74 | AWS US-East-1 standard pricing; no free-tier allowance or discounts; highest-bitrate viewer consumption and a 99% cache/hit ratio. Variable bitrate and content complexity may lower the estimate. |
| Approximately 10,000 viewers at 1080p for one hour | About $1,505.60 | AWS US-East-1 standard pricing; no free-tier allowance or discounts; highest-bitrate viewer consumption and a 99% cache/hit ratio. CloudFront distribution accounts for $1,492.56 of the modeled total; the remainder covers encoding, ingest, packaging and origination. |
These are AWS scenario estimates, not quotes for another provider or a universal event package. AWS says prices are subject to change. Costs depend on geography, profile and resolution, duration, bitrate, cache assumptions and current rates; check the provider’s current pricing and model the event you expect to run.

How to estimate your own cost
- Define the event. Record the expected duration, target quality, likely audience size and average watch time. If these are uncertain, estimate more than one plausible scenario rather than treating one figure as guaranteed.
- Choose the platform and confirm eligibility. Check the exact plan, event access, concurrency limits and any maximum stream duration. Do not apply one platform’s rules to another.
- Separate one-time and recurring costs. List any equipment you actually need to buy separately from software subscriptions and platform fees. An existing phone or camera may suit your workflow.
- Check included delivery and usage thresholds. Find out whether distribution is part of the plan, whether a bandwidth threshold applies, and what happens if you exceed it. For high-traffic events, ask for a usage estimate based on your region, quality, viewers and watch time.
- Compare the full operating need. Include billing period, software features, guest or multistream requirements, recording needs, event limits and delivery charges—not just the headline subscription price.
- Recheck volatile terms before purchase. Plan prices, promotions, renewal terms and infrastructure rates can change. Use each provider’s current official pricing and documentation for the final decision.
When the question is specifically 24/7 YouTube streaming
For a documentary channel that wants to keep uploaded videos playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, the cost question is different from producing a camera-led event. StreamNeo is the first option to consider for this specific use: it runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live studio. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Every plan has the same features; only the billing length changes. You can use it with a computer turned off, without OBS or a home connection staying on. StreamNeo lists daily, weekly, monthly, six-month and yearly billing, with UPI and cards in India and card checkout worldwide; for five or more slots, contact support.

Quick Recap
Sources and platform details
- OBS Studio describes its software as free and open source.
- StreamYard’s pricing page lists free and paid plans and notes that prices may vary with promotions, renewals and custom offers.
- Vimeo’s live-event documentation explains plan eligibility, camera and encoder requirements, concurrent streams, duration limits and target bitrates. It lists maximum target bitrates of up to 5,000 kbps for Advanced/Premium and 9,000 kbps for Enterprise; these are Vimeo account-specific limits, not universal recommendations.
- Vimeo’s bandwidth guidance covers the 2 TB monthly threshold and custom usage discussions.
- AWS’s 2025 streaming cost guide provides the scenario estimates above.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Calling a software price the total cost. A free studio tool does not establish that platform access, gear or delivery is free.
- Treating an AWS example as a quote. The figures above model specific event sizes and US-East-1 assumptions; they are not another provider’s rates.
- Applying Vimeo rules everywhere. Its eligible plans, bandwidth threshold and stream limits are product-specific.
- Comparing headline prices only. A useful comparison includes features, plan limits, billing terms and any audience-delivery charges that apply to your usage.
