Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no universal monthly price: the cost depends on your server’s measured power draw, your electricity tariff, your internet plan and whether you already own suitable hardware. For two continuous 1080p30 streams at YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate, plan for about 10 Mbps of video upload and 3.24 decimal TB of payload in a 30-day month, before overhead. At 720p30, the corresponding estimates are about 6 Mbps and 1.944 decimal TB. Add electricity using your actual wall-power measurement and local rate; list any new computer as a separate one-time or amortized cost.
Estimate the monthly cost from your own inputs
Separate recurring operating costs from hardware. The recurring estimate is electricity plus any internet charge attributable to upload usage; a new server is a separate purchase. If an existing always-on server is capable of handling both streams, its purchase cost may be zero, but the added power draw and workload still need measuring.
- Choose the stream settings. Use the actual resolution and encoder bitrate for each feed.
- Estimate monthly upload data. Add the two video bitrates in Mbps, then multiply by 324 decimal GB per Mbps-month. This assumes a continuous 30-day month and excludes protocol overhead.
- Check your internet plan. Confirm its steady upload capacity, whether uploads count toward a data allowance, and any overage terms. Do not assume your plan bills by the terabyte.
- Measure server electricity. Measure average wall power while both streams are running, then calculate the monthly kWh and multiply by your local electricity tariff.
- Itemize hardware separately. If you need a new server, record its purchase cost or a chosen amortized amount separately from the monthly electricity and internet costs.
Upload bandwidth and data for two streams
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. Those are recommended encoder video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. Allow additional upload headroom for bitrate variation, audio, protocol overhead and other household traffic. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also notes that YouTube transcodes a live stream into viewer output formats, so the home encoder sends its selected feed rather than separately producing every rendition.
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate per stream | Two-stream video bitrate | Continuous payload in a 30-day month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps | About 3.24 decimal TB |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps | About 1.944 decimal TB |
The monthly payload figures are arithmetic based on YouTube’s recommended rates, not data-use figures published by YouTube. For example, 10 Mbps × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 equals about 3,240,000 decimal MB. Actual traffic will differ with audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and bitrate behavior. Your provider may define TB differently, so check its billing terms.

Use 1080p when the documentary’s detail benefits from it and your sustained upload capacity and data terms can accommodate two feeds. A 720p setting lowers the bitrate and payload estimate, but the best choice depends on the source material and viewing needs. Test both feeds together on the intended connection rather than relying only on a single-stream speed test.

Monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × electricity price per kWh
| Average continuous draw | Energy in 30 days | Cost calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 10 W | 7.2 kWh | 7.2 × your local price per kWh |
| 50 W | 36 kWh | 36 × your local price per kWh |
| 100 W | 72 kWh | 72 × your local price per kWh |
These are calculated energy amounts, not claims about typical server power. To illustrate the tariff calculation only, an assumed rate of $0.20/kWh and an additional measured 10 W would mean 7.2 kWh × $0.20, or $1.44 for 30 days. Both inputs are assumptions, not a typical tariff or a measured server result. Substitute your own meter reading and bill rate.

Measure at the wall while both streams are running, ideally after the workload has settled. Two encoders can increase CPU or GPU load and electricity use, but the increase depends on the machine, codec, resolution, frame rate and hardware acceleration. No minimum computer specification or typical power draw can be inferred for your setup without testing it. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say expensive equipment is not required to get started, but that does not establish that a particular home server can encode two feeds reliably. YouTube live streaming tips
Include hardware without hiding it in the monthly bill
If your existing machine can run both encoders continuously, do not count a new computer purchase as a necessary operating cost. If it cannot, compare suitable hardware separately: state the purchase price for your location, decide over how many months you want to amortize it, and measure the new machine’s actual wall draw. No specific mini PC or server model can be recommended without evidence about its performance on your codec and settings.

A useful worksheet is:
- Recurring electricity: measured average watts × 0.72 = kWh per 30-day month; multiply by your local tariff.
- Internet: compare the estimated payload and required steady upload headroom with your ISP’s cap and overage rules.
- Hardware: zero additional purchase if existing equipment is sufficient, or itemize the new host separately.
- Backup recording: account for local storage and any added system load if you need dependable copies of the streams.
Make sure YouTube can accept and retain the streams
Channel eligibility and stream limits
YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. It states a limit of up to 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key, so two active streams fit within those numeric limits if the other eligibility requirements are met. Follow YouTube’s setup guidance for creating and using the encoder streams. YouTube’s live-streaming setup and eligibility guidance
Encoder and connection settings
- Codec and bitrate: YouTube’s cited recommendations are H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 3 Mbps for 720p30.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as specified in YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- Keyframes: use a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide
- Testing: test the actual two-feed upload and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Leave bandwidth headroom rather than running both feeds at the connection’s measured ceiling.
Keep each stream key private, use the key assigned to the intended stream, and replace it in the encoder if you reset it in YouTube. A key is a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

Copyright and continuous prerecorded material
A prerecorded file is not automatically cleared for live rebroadcast. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to both the video and its audio. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to represent that they have the necessary rights, including applicable music rights. Third-party content can interrupt or terminate a live stream; even when you believe you have a license, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the content to run without a claim-related interruption. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and ensure rights are in place before leaving either feed running.
Plan for the archive limit
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours. If it exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all; very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. A 24/7 stream therefore should not be treated as a dependable archive. Use local recording if you need a backup, or schedule restarts before the 12-hour threshold and verify how the resulting segments are saved. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup. YouTube’s archive guidance
DIY operating checks and troubleshooting
- Stream drops or YouTube reports poor health: check sustained upload headroom with both streams active, reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain them, and test RTMPS settings and stream health.
- One feed fails while the other runs: check that the correct stream key is assigned to each encoder, that both streams are active within YouTube’s limits, and that the host can handle both encoding workloads.
- Server overheats, becomes unstable or uses more power than expected: check CPU/GPU load, cooling and hardware-encoding settings; then remeasure wall power under the actual workload.
- Internet bill is higher than expected: compare actual usage with the estimate, accounting for protocol overhead and reconnects, and confirm how your ISP counts upload data and defines its allowance.
- Archive is missing: a stream that runs beyond 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or use planned restarts and confirm that each segment is saved.
- Copyright claim or interruption: verify rights for every video and audio element and resolve any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder before resuming continuous playback.
