Multiply the laptop’s average power draw at the wall by 0.72 to estimate monthly electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh, or “units”): an illustrative 20–60 W average works out to 14.4–43.2 units. The rupee cost depends on your actual average draw and the marginal rate on your electricity bill; there is no single nationwide price.
Estimate the monthly electricity use
Use the average power drawn by the laptop and charger together while YouTube is playing—not the maximum wattage printed on the charger.
Average wall draw (W) Ă— 720 hours Ă· 1,000 = monthly kWh
Because 720 Ă· 1,000 = 0.72, each average watt of draw uses 0.72 kWh over a 30-day month.

These are scenario calculations, not measurements of a particular old laptop. The 20–60 W range is illustrative; an individual machine may use less or more depending on its condition, settings and playback behavior.
Convert units into your rupee cost
Multiply the estimated monthly kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to your household. For example, if your measured monthly use is 28.8 kWh, multiply 28.8 by the relevant per-unit energy rate on your current bill or tariff schedule. That estimates the added energy-charge portion; it is not necessarily the full change to the bill, which can include other charges or adjustments.

India does not have one rupee-per-unit rate for every household. Retail tariffs are set by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state subsidies may apply to particular consumer categories. Rates and fuel or power-purchase cost adjustments can vary by location and over time. Use your current bill and the tariff schedule for your own DISCOM, consumer category and consumption slab rather than borrowing a rate from another state.
The Central Electricity Authority publishes a Tariff and Duty of Electricity Supply in India—March 2026 compilation. For a state-specific example, MSEDCL lists an MYT tariff order dated 25 March 2026 on its tariff orders page. Neither should be treated as your household’s applicable rate without checking your location and billing conditions.

Measure the laptop’s actual average draw
- Connect a plug-in electricity usage meter. Put it between the wall outlet and the laptop’s charger, checking that the meter is compatible with your outlet and the electrical ratings involved. No particular meter model is required or implied to have been tested.
- Run representative playback. Use the laptop as you normally would for YouTube, including the usual screen brightness, power mode, browser and display or sleep settings.
- Record average watts over a representative interval. Playback and power consumption can vary; a brief reading may not represent a full day. The meter’s average reading is more useful than the charger label.
- Calculate monthly units. Multiply the measured average watts by 0.72 for a 30-day, 24/7 month. If the laptop runs fewer than 720 hours, use its actual operating hours instead: watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000.
- Apply your own tariff rate. Multiply the resulting kWh by the applicable marginal energy rate from your bill or current local schedule.
What can change the estimate?
- Screen brightness: a brighter display can increase the laptop’s draw.
- Power and sleep settings: confirm that the laptop will not sleep or stop playback during unattended operation; settings that keep it awake can affect energy use.
- Browser and playback behavior: the software and playback workload can change consumption.
- Hours of operation: the 0.72 multiplier assumes a full 30 days at 24 hours per day. Use actual hours for a different schedule.
- Tariff conditions: household category, consumption slab and subsidies affect the applicable marginal rate.
If comparing two laptops or setups, measure both under the same playback conditions and compare average wall watts. Keep playback resolution, screen brightness, power mode and sleep behavior consistent, then apply the same hours and local tariff. Different tariffs or billing slabs are not evidence that one device is more efficient.
