Black Sabbath had sold over 70 million albums together, according to Universal Music Canada in a November 11, 2011 announcement. That is the strongest band-wide figure available here, but it is a dated reported threshold—not an exact current total or a count of every format.
What does the 70 million figure mean?
Universal Music Canada used “over 70 million albums together” in its November 11, 2011 announcement about the original lineup’s reunion, recording plans and record deal. The statement specifies albums, but does not explain a detailed counting method or update the total to the present. Read Universal Music Canada’s announcement.

So the careful answer to “How much did Black Sabbath sell?” is: the band was reported to have sold over 70 million albums by 2011. The figure should not be recast as an exact 2026 total, or as a verified sum of albums, singles and streaming equivalents.
Why certifications and chart records do not provide a new band-wide total
U.S. certifications measure individual recordings
The RIAA’s Gold & Platinum database records U.S. certification milestones for specific releases. It lists Black Sabbath’s Paranoid at 4× Platinum, dated January 31, 1995, alongside earlier certification entries. That establishes a major U.S. milestone for the album; it does not tally all of the band’s sales worldwide. The RIAA describes its awards program as a way to honor artists and track sound-recording sales. See the RIAA Gold & Platinum database and how the awards program works.

UK charts show performance, not cumulative copies
The Official Charts Company lists Paranoid among Black Sabbath’s UK number-one albums and provides the band’s chart history. Chart positions and appearances document performance in that market; they do not reveal a cumulative worldwide sales count. View Black Sabbath’s Official Charts history.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can we give an exact current worldwide sales total?
No authoritative current ledger was found that combines every Black Sabbath album, single and streaming equivalent across all eras. The 2011 label statement, U.S. certification records and UK chart history use different measures, geographies and dates, so they cannot be added together to create a defensible current total. The exact all-format worldwide figure remains unestablished.

- Sabotage is the sixth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, originally released in July 1975. It was recorded in the midst of litigation with their former manager Patrick Meehan and the stress that resulted from the band's ongoing legal woes infiltrated the recording process, inspiring the album's title. It was co-produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and Mike Butcher.
