For reliable live streaming, your sustained upload capacity needs to exceed the bitrate your encoder sends. Twitch recommends allowing 30% above the configured stream bitrate as a general planning margin—not a guarantee. The right bitrate depends on your platform, resolution, frame rate and codec, so use the destination’s guidance and test the actual connection before going live.
How much upload speed do you need?
Start with the stream’s configured bitrate, then leave room above it for a steadier connection. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload speed equal to your stream bitrate plus 30%. For example, a stream configured at 6 Mbps calls for roughly 7.8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that rule. Treat this as a planning margin, not a promise that the stream will remain stable.
For YouTube, the platform’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps. Adding Twitch’s margin as a conservative planning illustration gives about 15.6 Mbps, but YouTube does not publish 15.6 Mbps as a requirement. Test your specific setup and monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators.
A speed test is useful, but a single result does not prove your connection can sustain the stream for its full duration or maintain a good route to the selected ingest server. Compare the available upload capacity—not download speed—with the bitrate you plan to send.

YouTube bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s current H.264 live encoder table recommends the following bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not measured guarantees of picture quality or connection reliability.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube presents AV1 and H.265 using minimum and maximum bitrate ranges rather than the same H.264 recommendation column. Check the YouTube live encoder settings for the current ranges and applicable setup details before choosing a codec.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough for live streaming?
It depends on the stream bitrate and how much upload capacity remains stable during the broadcast. Ten Mbps is below YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60, which is 12 Mbps; it is also below the approximately 15.6 Mbps planning illustration obtained by adding Twitch’s 30% margin to that bitrate. Ten Mbps may suit a lower-bitrate setting, but the number alone cannot establish reliability.
For Twitch, apply its general 30% margin to your configured bitrate. For YouTube, start with the platform’s recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to use, then test your connection and watch stream health. Do not treat either platform’s guidance as a universal bandwidth chart for every codec, network or household.

What affects the bandwidth your setup needs?
- Resolution and frame rate: Higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate output generally calls for a higher bitrate. Twitch also notes that a higher frame rate requires more encoding power.
- Codec and platform: YouTube’s H.264 recommendations differ by resolution and frame rate; its AV1 and H.265 guidance uses bitrate ranges instead. Follow the destination’s guidance for the codec you actually use.
- Stable upload capacity: The stream’s configured bitrate is the upload load. Other upload activity on the same connection can reduce the capacity available to your streaming computer; check the actual connection under representative conditions.
- Connection to ingest: Your local speed-test result does not guarantee a stable route to the platform’s remote ingest server. OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and that server.
- Encoder capability: The computer or hardware encoder must also sustain the selected resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Twitch notes that higher frame rates need more encoding power.
How to test before going live
- Choose the destination and output settings. Set the intended platform, resolution, frame rate and codec. Use its published bitrate guidance for that combination; do not base the choice on download speed.
- Check upload speed. Run an upload speed test on the connection and computer you will use for streaming. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Regard the result as a check, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Leave headroom. For Twitch, its general-practice guidance is to plan for upload speed equal to configured bitrate plus 30%. For YouTube, its published bitrate figures are encoder recommendations; any extra margin you apply is your own conservative planning choice, not a YouTube-stated requirement.
- Run a representative test stream. Test with the motion, audio and setup expected in the actual broadcast. Check the platform and encoder’s stream-health indicators before relying on the configuration for an event.
- Monitor during the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health rather than assuming a pre-stream speed test settles the question. If frames drop or the connection disconnects, investigate the network and ingest route as well as the selected settings.
Fix dropped frames and disconnections
OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. A high nominal speed-test result does not rule out that problem.
- Review bitrate and platform limits: Confirm that your encoder is set to a bitrate supported by your platform and chosen output. If available upload capacity is not sufficient or consistent, test a lower bitrate or less demanding output setting.
- Check stream-health indicators: Inspect the encoder and platform status during a test. Twitch points streamers to Twitch Inspector; OBS recommends checking the connection to the ingest server.
- Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet: If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, test a wired connection. Ethernet can help isolate a local wireless issue, but it cannot add capacity to your ISP plan and is not a guaranteed fix.
- Look for competing uploads: Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection’s upload capacity during the test. Repeat under conditions similar to the planned broadcast.
- Retest the full setup: Change one setting at a time and run another representative test. A better speed-test number alone is not enough; confirm that stream health improves.
