Jennette McCurdy described difficult experiences from her Nickelodeon years in her 2022 memoir, including encounters with an adult she called “The Creator.” Her book did not name that person; contemporary reporting connected the description to Dan Schneider, who created or ran iCarly and Sam & Cat. Miranda Cosgrove’s documented role was different: she expressed sympathy and said she had not realized how difficult things had been for her co-star. The available accounts do not show Cosgrove making an allegation against Schneider.
What Jennette McCurdy said in her memoir
McCurdy played Sam Puckett on iCarly and later starred in Sam & Cat. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, published in 2022, she recounted experiences from her acting career and referred to an adult she called “The Creator.” She did not identify that person by name in the book. Contemporary coverage connected the description to Schneider based on his role on the shows; that identification is reporting’s connection, not a name McCurdy used in the memoir. The Washington Post’s 2022 interview with McCurdy reported her account.

Among the incidents she described were an unsolicited shoulder massage and pressure to sip alcohol. She also said Nickelodeon offered her $300,000 after Sam & Cat ended in exchange for not speaking publicly about her experiences, and that she rejected the offer. The amount and circumstances are McCurdy’s reported account, not an independently verified payment.
What Miranda Cosgrove said
Cosgrove, McCurdy’s iCarly co-star, responded to McCurdy’s disclosures with sympathy. In comments to The New York Times relayed by AS USA, Cosgrove said she had not understood that McCurdy was facing much harder struggles, because she often seemed cheerful on set.

That response is not a firsthand allegation about Schneider or a confirmation of the experiences described in McCurdy’s memoir. The evidence here supports describing Cosgrove as expressing surprise and empathy, not as a co-accuser.
How the accounts relate to Quiet on Set
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV brought together interviews and allegations from former cast and crew about workplace conditions and inappropriate material on Nickelodeon productions. McCurdy was not an interview participant. Director Emma Schwartz told PBS NewsHour that the memoir helped prompt the filmmakers’ further inquiry. The series’ interviews are separate testimony; the memoir is McCurdy’s own account, not a segment of her interview in the documentary.

The directors also discussed the need for complexity in telling the story. As co-director Mary Robertson put it in Vanity Fair, “Complexity is important to us as filmmakers.” The series should therefore be understood as a set of distinct accounts and reporting, rather than as proof that every allegation has the same source or has been independently established.

Schneider acknowledged mistakes and poor judgment in his leadership, saying, “There is no doubt that I was sometimes a bad leader,” and apologized for that behavior. Separately, he denied involvement in or facilitating crimes committed by convicted predators. His position is available in his statement.

- Factory sealed DVD
Nickelodeon said it could not corroborate or negate allegations about behavior on productions decades earlier, while describing its process for investigating formal complaints and workplace safeguards. The Los Angeles Times reproduced the network’s response. In May 2024, Schneider sued the makers of Quiet on Set, alleging defamation and improper implications; the Associated Press reported on the lawsuit. A filing states claims by the parties; it does not by itself resolve the underlying dispute.

What the record does—and does not—establish
- McCurdy’s memoir is a first-person account of her experiences; it uses the label “The Creator” without naming Schneider.
- Reporting linked that label to Schneider through his professional role on the shows. Keep that attribution distinct from the memoir’s wording.
- Cosgrove expressed sympathy and said she had not understood McCurdy’s struggles. The cited account does not establish a separate allegation from Cosgrove.
- McCurdy’s memoir informed the documentary’s inquiry, but she did not appear as an interview participant in Quiet on Set.
- The accounts cited here do not establish a broader statistic about abuse or workplace conditions across children’s television.
