Micah Nelson joined Neil Young and Crazy Horse on guitar for the 2024 Love Earth summer tour, stepping in while Nils Lofgren was unavailable because of his commitments with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. In a March 19, 2024 interview with Andy Greene for Rolling Stone, published by Yahoo Entertainment, Nelson described the invitation as a lifelong musical ambition fulfilled: “I’ve been rehearsing for this job my whole life.”
Why Micah Nelson was part of the 2024 tour
Nelson took the guitarist role for the 2024 Love Earth tour while Lofgren was occupied with the E Street Band. Nelson presented the opportunity not as an ordinary gig, but as a personal milestone rooted in a long connection to Young’s music and Crazy Horse.

He recalled that, if someone had asked him at 15 which band he most wanted to join, his answer would have been Crazy Horse. That is Nelson’s own description of the invitation’s meaning; the interview does not detail a formal hiring process.
How Nelson’s connection to Neil Young began
A childhood shaped by Young’s music
Nelson said Young’s music was part of the soundtrack of his childhood. Shortly after Nelson turned 13, he saw Young perform with Crazy Horse. He remembered the show as a lasting musical influence, one that helped shape his sense of what the band represented.

From Farm Aid to Promise of the Real
Nelson later performed with Young at Farm Aid and spent years playing with Young and Promise of the Real. That work gave him substantial experience with Young’s catalog well before the 2024 Crazy Horse tour. Nelson recalled that he had played more than 100 shows with Young, but that figure is his recollection in the interview, not an independently verified count.
Why he was prepared for the band’s live approach
Years of performing Young’s songs meant Nelson already knew a broad range of material. He described the catalog he had learned as growing from roughly 100 songs to roughly 200 over time; those figures, too, are his recollections from the interview.
Familiarity did not mean every performance followed a fixed plan. Nelson described Young’s onstage approach as spontaneous, with songs sometimes called or handled in ways that required musicians to adapt quickly. Nelson said the pressure of playing with Young challenged him to grow both as a musician and as a person.

Nelson viewed the invitation as both a chance to honor Crazy Horse’s history and an opportunity to bring his own playing to the group. His story links that role to a formative teenage concert, years of work alongside Young, and a deep familiarity with the songs—not to a claim that he was replacing the band’s history or ranking above its other guitarists.
