Matthew Perry’s best-documented earnings came from Friends, where his reported salary rose from $22,500 per episode in the original contract to $1 million per episode in the final two seasons. The often-repeated $120 million figure is a third-party net-worth estimate, not an audited accounting of his wealth. Perry also spoke publicly about spending heavily on addiction treatment and described a $20 million penthouse purchase he later regretted.
How much did Matthew Perry earn from Friends?
The Television Academy’s 2024 oral history traces the cast’s reported per-episode salary progression. The figures are rates, not a verified total of Perry’s career earnings or take-home pay.
| Period | Reported salary per episode |
|---|---|
| Original contracts | $22,500 |
| Season 3 | $75,000 |
| Season 4 | $85,000 |
| Season 5 | $100,000 |
| Season 6 | $125,000 |
| Seasons 7 and 8 | $750,000 |
| Final two seasons | $1 million |
The Television Academy recounts that the cast negotiated collectively as their pay increased. David Schwimmer explained the equal-pay principle this way: “I don’t want to come in to a work environment where someone is making more. This is all our show and we should be treated the same.” Read the Television Academy’s 2024 oral history.

Is Matthew Perry’s net worth really $120 million?
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Perry’s net worth at $120 million. That is an estimate from a third-party financial website, not an audited figure or a complete public balance sheet. The same site discusses probate filings reporting about $1.6 million in personal assets outside his trust. That inventory is not the total estate: it excludes trust assets and does not establish the value of all assets and liabilities.
The available records do not establish Perry’s complete lifetime income, final taxable estate, or total wealth. In particular, a reported salary rate, a net-worth estimate, and a probate inventory describe different things; none can be substituted for another. What did Perry say he spent money on?
Addiction treatment
In a 2022 Washington Post profile, Perry said he initially thought he had spent $7 million on rehabilitation, then revised the estimate to “probably $9 million.” This was his own approximate recollection, not audited spending. He also described himself as “a back-against-the-wall, old-time addict.” Read the Washington Post profile.
A Los Angeles penthouse
In a 2022 GQ interview, Perry recounted buying a 10,400-square-foot Los Angeles penthouse for $20 million because it reminded him of Bruce Wayne’s home. He later called the purchase a “stupid mistake.” That anecdote illustrates one high-end purchase; it does not provide a full property ledger or establish his overall real-estate profit or loss.
