Mark Fischbach, known as Markiplier, self-distributed Iron Lung in the United States and turned fans’ requests to local cinemas into a visible signal of demand. But this was not a one-person release: theatrical booking, distribution software and content delivery partners helped the film scale, while Piece of Magic Entertainment announced a separate European rollout.
How did Iron Lung go from a small plan to thousands of theaters?
The release began with modest expectations. In a 2026 interview with TheWrap, Fischbach said he thought releasing the film himself would put it in 200 theaters at most. A contemporaneous Boxoffice Pro report described an initial plan for 50–100 theaters. Those accounts may refer to different planning moments, so they are best treated as separate estimates rather than a single definitive starting count.
Fischbach announced participating theaters and encouraged fans to ask their local cinemas to book the film if it was not yet available nearby. The response exceeded his expectations. YouTube’s official interview describes fans lobbying theaters and Fischbach’s reaction to people discovering that contacting a cinema could affect whether a screening happened. He said, “They broke down a very powerful barrier to entry and realized, ‘Oh, if I call a movie theater, it actually changes the world around me.’”
That activity helped make demand legible to exhibitors; it does not show that fan requests alone booked every screen. The release also relied on organizations and systems that could handle the practical work of getting a film scheduled, delivered and reported.

What did “self-distributed” mean in practice?
For the US release, Fischbach took on self-distribution rather than relying on a conventional studio distributor. That label describes the distribution arrangement, not a release carried out without partners. Boxoffice Pro reported that Centurion Film Service partnered with Vista Group, using Mica for theatrical distribution workflows and Numero for box-office reporting. Deluxe was named as the content-delivery provider.

How large was the theatrical rollout?
The release expanded quickly after tickets went on sale December 9, 2025. Boxoffice Pro reported that the film reached more than 1,000 North American venues within a week and was then scheduled for more than 4,100 venues worldwide. That 4,100-plus figure was a planned footprint at the time of the report, not a final audited count.
For the US opening on January 30, 2026, The Numbers lists 3,015 opening theaters. Opening theaters, a scheduled worldwide venue count and a later database tally are different measures; they should not be treated as interchangeable evidence of the final number of screens in every territory.

For Europe, Piece of Magic Entertainment (POM) announced a theatrical release for January 30, 2026, describing the event as a response to fan demand. Its announcement covered Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czechia, Slovakia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The two arrangements show why “self-distributed” needs a geographic qualifier: Fischbach self-distributed the US release, while POM announced the European rollout. The announcement came from Piece of Magic Entertainment; it does not establish a complete list of final release dates across all territories.
What do the box-office figures say—and what don’t they say?
The Numbers’ 2026 listing reports a $51,226,173 worldwide box-office gross and a $3 million production budget. Those figures are not a profit calculation. They do not establish distribution expenses, exhibitor shares, taxes or the filmmaker’s net receipts.
Opening-weekend figures also vary by source. TheWrap reported $17.8 million in 2026, while The Numbers lists $18,190,786. Each should be attributed to its publisher rather than merged into a single unqualified number. Neither figure, on its own, explains the film’s final financial outcome.
What is known about watching the film after theaters?
The Numbers lists a YouTube video release dated May 31, 2026. The sources cited here do not establish a DVD or Blu-ray edition, nor do they provide a complete final screen count across every territory. Theatrical-release figures and the video-release listing answer different questions; one should not be used to infer the availability of a physical edition.
